Are you a fully licensed counselor working 20+ hours/week in clinical care or supervision? Have you experienced a significant moment (positive or challenging) related to your own wellness?

My name is Lakesha L. Jones, and I am a Ph.D. student at Mount Mary University. You are invited to participate in my dissertation research study titled: Do as I Say, Not as I Do: A Qualitative Exploration of Counselors’ Wellness Practices. This study explores the experiences of licensed professional counselors regarding wellness – both intentional efforts to prioritize it and times it may have been neglected. If you want to learn more or are interested in participating, please scan the QR code on the flyer or visit the following link: https://lnkd.in/gx5q-FfQ

Please feel free to share this invitation with other licensed professional counselors! Thank you in advance for considering participating.

“Doing the Work” A Real Conversation for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)Women in Leadership

Being a BIPOC woman in leadership is not for the weak.

No one really talks about it not the unspoken expectations, the invisible labor, or the weight of being “the only one” in the room. Not the exhaustion of always showing up, holding it all together, advocating for everyone else, and still wondering: Who’s advocating for me?

We’re leaders. We’re caretakers. We’re problem-solvers. We’re often the backbone of our family and organizations. But too often, we carry the title without the support. We’re expected to keep the peace, carry the load, and make it all look easy even when we’re on the verge of breaking inside. This is not sustainable.

Leadership isn’t always empowering sometimes, it feels like survival. And that’s not okay.

Wellness cannot be an afterthought. Self-preservation isn’t selfish it’s necessary. And if we’re going to lead, we have to be well. We deserve to be well.

➡️So let’s talk about it. No filters. No performance. Just truth.
➡️Who else is ready to have a real, open, and transparent conversation?
➡️ Who else is tired of surviving leadership instead of thriving in it?
➡️When is wellness part of the leadership strategy?
➡️When do we get to be whole, not just. high-performing?

Who’s ready to Do the work together?

I have an idea. A space. A vision. For us.
Let’s reclaim our wellness. Let’s center our voices.
Let’s lead differently starting with ourselves.

Are you in?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

This year, MHA's theme is "Turn Awareness into Action."

This month serves as a reminder to prioritize well-being, seek support when needed, and extend kindness and understanding to others. "In Every Story, There’s Strength."

This is your reminder to take care of yourself not just physically, but emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. This season is calling for reflection, accountability, and transformation.

2025 feels like the year of rapid change and repositioning. We’re being challenged on every level: policies/politics, health, relationships, business, employment, finances, loss/grief, and clarity around connections that no longer serve us. It may feel like you’re constantly breaking instead of moving forward but sometimes the breakdown comes before the BREAKTHROUGH.

So take a breath. Do the work. Stay grounded.
Treat people with kindness, not convenience. Don’t mishandle or misuse others; it's not a good look, and it’s not aligned with where you say you’re going. Be the same love, grace, and forgiveness you hope to receive. You never know the unseen battles someone may be facing, so lead with empathy.

Don't make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions. Check the data of your life before making moves. Be authentic. Be consistent. Give grace. This is not the season to ride emotional rollercoasters, especially not ones others didn’t sign up for. Facts over feelings.

Audit yourself. Change starts within. You can’t expect new outcomes if you’re recycling old habits. Growth begins with honesty and alignment. Leave people better than you found them because you look so much better when you lead with integrity and love. Move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

Do the Work. Be the change. And remember: healing isn’t linear, but it is always worth it. Ensure you're incorporating wellness and remember that your professional quality of life matters.

I am bursting with happiness and excitement for my supervisees! This Saturday, three of them are graduating, two have officially met their licensure requirements, and every single one has achieved a major professional milestone, whether it’s securing employment at their internship site, earning a promotion, or stepping boldly into private or group practice. One even gave me a tour of their brand-new office what a full-circle moment!

They’ve put in the work, stayed the course, and now they’re reaping the rewards. Watching them grow into confident, compassionate mental health professionals has been a true honor. And the best part? The best is still yet to come for them.

Today, I begin a new chapter with a fresh group of supervisees. I can’t wait to support them, champion them, and witness their own journeys unfold. What a privilege this work is.
