It is common to hear those two words together—commit and su***de. I cringe when I hear it. They didn’t commit a crime. They died by su***de.

The World Health Organization estimates that 800,000 people die by su***de each year. That is one death every forty seconds.

Women have more suicidal thoughts than men, yet men have a higher ‘successful’ rate of su***de. Both young men and women with limited education level and who are unemployed have significantly higher rates of attempt.

In 2015, WHO reported highest rates of su***de occurred in Sri Lanka. In 2008, it was reported that young people between 15 and 34 years old in China were more likely to die by su***de than by any other mean, especially young Chinese women in rural places because of 'arguments about marriage.'

Remember that there is not just one face of su***de. And feeling those feelings are not always indicative of a mental illness. They can stem from such things as trauma and abuse too.
