We're thrilled to announce that our Lung Transplant team has become the first in Wisconsin to utilize Paragonix Technologies BAROguard® to aid in lung preservation for transplant. BAROguard is a sophisticated hypothermic preservation system that automatically calibrates the airway pressure of donor lungs during transportation. Advanced technology like this allows for donor lungs to travel further, increasing the pool of available organs for patients. Adding BAROguard to our toolkit further aids our lung transplant team’s ability to help patients to get transplants sooner. Learn more: froedtert.com/lung-transplant.

What inspired you to become a physical therapist?
“I love helping people grow and feel stronger — both physically and mentally.”

What conditions do you treat most at Sixteenth Street?
“I treat orthopedic conditions — every joint in the body! Back pain is one of the most common issues I see.”

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
“Encouraging people to realize they can accomplish more than they think they can. Seeing patients reach their goals and return to the activities they love is the best part!”

How do you help patients stay motivated in their recovery?
“I start by asking what they want to get back to doing — that’s where motivation begins. Then we focus on the positives, big or small. Even small improvements show patients that their hard work matters and is making a difference.”

What motivates you to come to work every day?
“My patients! Knowing they have the tools to keep improving at home keeps me going. Pain can take a lot of joy away, so helping people get that joy back is incredibly rewarding. And of course, my amazing coworkers — they always make me laugh and feel supported!”

October is National Physical Therapy Month and we're showing our PT team some love! Meet Diego Villarreal, our Physical Therapy Team Leader!

What inspired you to become a physical therapist?
“I love to exercise and stay active — and I wanted a career where I could help others do the same. Physical therapy was the perfect fit!”

What conditions do you treat most at Sixteenth Street?
“I mainly see orthopedic conditions for patients ages 6 and up, as well as geriatric patients working on balance and conditioning. I also treat the occasional neurological condition.”

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
“Seeing people feel better! Whether it’s helping them manage pain, eliminate it completely, or feel confident about their next steps — that’s what makes it all worth it.”

How do you help patients stay motivated in their recovery?
“It’s not always easy! I’ve found that setting clear expectations and helping patients understand why we’re doing each exercise keeps them focused and connected to their goals.”

What motivates you to come to work every day?
“Building meaningful connections with patients and helping them achieve their functional goals.”
