Benjamin Jolley, a prominent pharmacy owner, with the help of others just reviewed registration data and determined that so far this year 9.3 pharmacies have closed EVERY DAY nationwide!

“[A] Total of 2276 pharmacies appear to have closed since 1/1/2024, including 1143 chain [pharmacies] and 1133 independents.” He also says that there was an additional 1.3 per day that had changes of ownership such as the purchase of independent pharmacies by chains (such as Harlan HyVee’s purchase of Kwik Rx).

Unfortunately we will be adding to that tally with next week’s closure of our Lehan Pharmacy in Minden.

We are witnessing the destruction of a profession at the hands of insurers and their Pharmacy Benefit Managers.

Finally congress is hearing what independent pharmacies have been trying to tell them. PBMs and their below-cost reimbursements are closing pharmacies across the country. Tell your elected officials that this bill needs to pass and pass soon!

The bill's introduction comes amid a hearing featuring testimony by UnitedHealth Group's Optum Rx, CVS Health's Caremark and Cigna's Express Scripts.
