What is Neuromuscular Equine Dentistry?

Where does Neuromuscular even fit into dentistry? What makes it specialized? How can this help my horse?

Common questions! Let’s start with WHAT it is. Neuromuscular dentistry focuses around the biomechanics of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and its correlation to the rest of the body. This seemingly small joint attributes to major body/muscle functions for the horse. From the growth of hooves, to alignment of the skeletal system, to proper nervous system function; the teeth contribute to everything!

How is it “specialized”? Neuromuscular Equine Dentistry is all done by hand. NO POWER TOOLS. Which allows for extreme precision on each stroke of the float. The horse’s head remains at a neutral/natural position during work, meaning the jaw is in a natural position. When the head is raised or elevated, the jaw slides back and the teeth would not be in the same alignment as when it’s lowered (remember we are going for balance!). And the speculum is opened and closed frequently for ultimate TMJ comfort and allowing the horse to feel each adjustment.

How can it help your horse? By focusing around the biomechanics of the TMJ and correct mastication (chewing) patterns, as well as the overall make up of the horse’s body, confirmation, and structure; the horse is able to form proper muscle mass, longer holding body work, better digestion of the nutrients being received and so much more. Overall creating a natural balance for body, mind and mouth.

*Note: We work with vets, farriers, osteopaths, chiropractors and many other bodyworkers. It takes a team to achieve optimal mobility

Walking over a raised pole requires greater flexion in your horse's joints than trotting.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁
🐴 Walk your horse over a pole on the floor.
🐴 Gradually raise it until it's around knee height.
🐴 Encourage your horse to lower his head to look at the pole.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬
✅ Lifts and flexes the back, hip, shoulder, elbow, stifle and hock.
✅ Strengthens the muscles and structures involved in engagement, hip flexion and pelvic stability.
✅ Improves suppleness and flexibility through the shoulder, elbow, hip, stifle and hock.

To really see the benefits do this on a daily basis. To make it easy to incorporate this exercise into your daily routine, place a raised pole, or small log somewhere you regularly walk such as on the route to and from the field.
