Experimental mRNA flu vaccine shows superior efficacy against symptomatic illness

The vaccine was fully protective in a small human challenge model, showing superior efficacy to the conventional 4-strain flu vaccine

A human-challenge randomized controlled trial, published last week in NEJM Evidence, finds that an mRNA (modRNA) influenza vaccine is 100% effective against both symptomatic and febrile flu, compared with 85% and 100% with the conventional quadrivalent (four-strain) influenza vaccine (QIV).

Common antibiotic linked to risk of acute respiratory failure in kids, young adults

Although the overall risk was low, Canadian researchers found a higher risk of acute respiratory failure in 10- to 25-year-olds who took trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

A new study of adolescents and young adults has found a commonly used antibiotic for skin infections, urinary tract infections, and acne is associated with an increased risk of respiratory failure.
