The other day a client asked me “what was the best tool you used in working through your addiction?”
I didn’t even hesitate before answering: spirituality.
This whole concept of spirituality is pretty trendy right now. You may have heard it talked about on social media, by wellness influencers, or even from yours truly.
Ultimately, spirituality is a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves. It is a universal human experience.
So, what does spirituality have to do with addiction?
Before I fully stepped into my spirituality I was sort of one foot in the door of recovery. I had recovered from my crippling co***ne addiction (bet ya didn’t know that one 😉). I was however still drinking, smoking pot & ni****ne, & using other recreational drugs.
Once I made the decision to surrender into my spirituality I was able to completely release myself from the substances that were destroying me.
Spirituality helped me understand that I am here on this planet of my choosing, for a reason. Spirituality lead me to trust that I am one with the highest source (God, Universe, highest self, etc.). Spirituality anchored my belief that every single thing I have gone through & will go through is for my ultimate enhancement.
Spirituality will look different to everyone. For some it’s religious. For others it’s not. For some it’s rituals. For others it’s fluid. For some it’s all compassing. For others it’s here & there.
For me, spirituality is a conscious choice. It is a daily practice. It is omnipresent. I wake up everyday & make the decision to tap into it.
My favorite spiritual practices include:
- Prayer
- Meditation
- Reflection
- Gratitude
- Nature
- Laughter
