LOVE THIS ANALOGY!

You're holding a cup of coffee and someone accidentally bumps into you, causing it to spill everywhere.

Why did you spill the coffee?

"Because someone bumped into me."

Wrong answer.

You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup. If there had been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea.

Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out.

So, when life shakes you up, whatever is inside you will come out.

It's easy to pretend everything's fine until you're shaken.

So, we have to ask ourselves, "What's in my cup?"

When life gets tough, what spills over? Joy? Gratitude? Peace? Humility? Anger? Bitterness? A victim mentality? A tendency to quit?

Remember LIFE gives you the cup; YOU choose what to fill it with!

The impact of being a first responder on relationships is one of the most frequent challenges we hear about. We all have needs, needs that are important to share in a healthy, productive and responsible way. Communication about our inner experience takes bravery.

Joseph brought his generous spirit and infectious smile everywhere he went. He pitched in frequently to support and advocate for other firefighters - once driving an hour in the early morning, during winter & after working a double - to be at an event we were holding. That is the kind of man he was. We are heartbroken for all that knew and loved him. đź’”

We had the beautiful experience of being with Richfield Fire Department's loved ones this weekend sharing and creating community. Comments we consistently heard were "I feel less alone" and "connecting with others going through similar struggles was really valuable". Stronger families = stronger and more resilient firefighters.

We're getting ready for our second family training of the year so far. Families are the backbone of our responders, but often the stress of the job plays out at home.

The missing piece in many fire department wellness programs is engaging the family in managing the stressors and risks of a firefighting career.

"I need a therapist. How do I find a good one?"

We get this question a lot and most often it is from responders who have been silently suffering a long time before they felt ready to ask for help. Here are some pointers on how to know if a therapist is a good fit for you.

1. Ask a potential provider directly about their experience working with First Responders; Firefighters, Police/LE, EMS or Dispatch. Ask them to please share a little about their work with these groups. Even good trauma therapists aren't always a good fit to work with first responders.

2. Ask them what evidence-based modalities they are trained in for your specific concern (trauma, depression, anxiety, etc.). Some good modalities to be on the look out for are EMDR & CBT amongst others (ask us and we can help you sort through all the letters!)

You are a customer and providers should be easily able to answer the above questions. Not all therapists are the same or have the same training or experiences. Often we see people who identify as a "trauma therapist" or "trauma informed" but are not equipped with the right training to properly help the responders coming to them. Saying "I'm a trauma therapist" without explaining what modalities they use or their experience with first responders is not good enough. Unfortunately, we've heard WAY TOO MANY stories about responders asking for help and getting paired with a provider that was not equipped to serve them - or worse provided bad care.

At any time if you need help finding the right provider for you or someone you know, we're here to help!
