One of my most favorite things is celebrating the HUGE milestone of graduating from speech therapy for my students!! This week we are celebrating 4️⃣ graduations! 🎉

It is always bittersweet to see them go (and they all fight me to stay), but the ultimate goal for speech/articulation speech therapy is to learn the tools and techniques to speak at a level that you no longer need to think about sound production and/or you are making your own self•corrections in your conversational speech.

As a school based SLP, I am careful to bring up nearing graduation to students and families. Many are excited about being dismissed from speech while others can feel hesitant or even fearful. What if my child regresses? What if..

Which is why I always give caregivers a heads up and point out..

👏🏼 How far their child has come and the sounds mastered.
👏🏼 The tools they have learned and how they are using them independently across many settings.
👏🏼 The DATA that supports the mastery of skill.
👏🏼 Not only my observations but their teacher’s observations and how academics is no longer impacted.

And most importantly..

👏🏼 I ask for their input and observations.

And for those that are fearful..

👏🏼 That one year safety net that allows a student to be pulled back into speech therapy in the case that the student regresses and their academics are impacted.

When you give caregivers all this information to support your proposal of dismissal, their fears and uncertainties are often soothed.
