🌱 Spring is a GREAT time to support your body’s detox pathways! Especially as we navigate heightened allergen exposure with the change of seasons.

Here’s what I’m enjoying right now from my recent pop into the Seward Co-op:

🌿 Kale & Sprouts: Packed with sulforaphane, polyphenols and DIM, these foods activate your liver’s Phase I & II detox enzymes. This helps the body clear toxins and protect our cells from oxidative damage.

🌱 Nettle: this native perennial is a natural diuretic that supports kidney filtration and stimulates lymphatic flow. It helps flush what your body no longer needs, and it can also gently support histamine clearance to ease allergy symptoms!

🍵 Burdock Root: is one of my favorite liver supportive botanicals. Burdock also reduces oxidized LDL and acts as a gentle lymphatic to clear acne prone skin. Stay tuned for more on how to prepare this!

💪 And finally be mindful of protein! Amino acids aren’t just meant for muscle building, they’re essential for producing antibodies, activating immune cells, and keeping your whole system functioning properly.

How are you using foods mindfully today? 👩🏻‍🌾

Okay folks, let’s talk hormones! 💕

Hormones are chemical messengers made by endocrine organs throughout the body, and each plays a unique role in helping you function at your best.

1️⃣ The pituitary & hypothalamus act like your body’s control center, receiving information from all over and sending out signals that tell other glands when to make hormones.
2️⃣ The thyroid is essential for fetal development, metabolism in adults, and the proper function of nearly every body system. The parathyroid glands regulate calcium levels to keep bones strong and nerves firing properly.
3️⃣ The adrenal glands produce precursors to estrogen and testosterone, stress hormones like cortisol, and molecules that help regulate blood pressure.
4️⃣ The pancreas produces insulin to help you use blood sugar for energy, and glucagon to release stored sugar when blood sugar drops too low.
5️⃣ The ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone, which regulate the menstrual cycle and play a key role in fertility, mood, and bone health.

While each hormone has a primary job, none of them work in isolation. Hormone systems “talk” to each other all the time. For example, have you ever missed a period during a really stressful time? Or noticed more acne while gaining weight?

You can support proper hormone signals in tangible ways through:
🥦 Using food as medicine
🏃🏻‍♀️ Moving your body regularly
😴 Prioritizing restorative sleep
🏝️ Taking time for relaxation and self‑care
🌿 Thoughtful use of botanical medicines
💊 Targeted nutritional supplements when appropriate

Hormones adapt to change. So can you. ✨

🌱Approximately 1 in 10 Minnesota adults were diagnosed with diabetes in 2024, and a similar proportion may be living with diabetes without knowing it.

Diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are too high, either because the body does not produce enough insulin (Type 1) or does not respond properly to insulin (Type 2).

At your annual physical, ask your doctor about screening labs such as:
✅ Fasting glucose
✅ HbA1c
✅ Fasting insulin

Elevated results may not seem urgent, but unchecked blood sugar can quietly damage blood vessels, nerves, and organs over time.

Common symptoms people with diabetes may notice include:
❌ Headaches
❌ Fatigue
❌ Dizziness
❌ Blurry vision
❌ Changes in sensation in the hands or feet
❌ Increased appetite or thirst
❌ Frequent urination
❌ Sexual dysfunction
❌ Unintended weight gain or loss
❌ Slow wound healing

Preventive medicine is essential for slowing or preventing the progression of Type 2 diabetes and for reducing the overall cost burden on our healthcare system. Naturopathic interventions for diabetes are safe, effective, and can beautifully complement conventional treatments or even help prevent the need for medications if imbalances are caught early enough.

This one really stuck with me 🌱

I first heard this from my grandfather at the dining table in my childhood home. When I explained to him the principles of naturopathic medicine, his response was “An ounce of prevention saves a pound of cure”. And boy was he right.👴🏻

Implementing the fundamental pillars of good health through dietary and lifestyle modifications can significantly reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. This is especially true for heart disease and diabetes, which remain leading causes of mortality in the United States. ♥️

These preventive strategies also save billions annually in health-care spending by decreasing emergency room visits, insurance costs, polypharmacy-related adverse drug reactions, and urgent surgical procedures.

What I love about my grandpa’s perspective is that it emphasizes scale 🌱

Small, sustainable changes practiced consistently often create far greater impact than drastic shifts that we can’t maintain over time.👏🏼

🏃🏻‍♀️This year, one of my personal goals was to run 7-miles each week of 2026. Save one week while I was on vacation I have met this goal. What I value most about my mindset with this movement goal is that it’s quantifiable and flexible. I can run one mile each day, or 2-3 for a few days, or go wild and run all 7 in one go! The choice is mine, and it’s adaptable to the realities of my day-to-day.

What small change can you start today that will make a big impact down the road? ✨

Another great study to highlight, which was published last month! 👩🏻‍🔬

💩 Gastrointestinal complaints are often second in line after the hormonal concerns women with PCOS share with me. I find that I often recommend a tailored dietary and supplemental protocol to support the gut microbiome, so the use of probiotics to improve fertility outcomes certainly caught my attention.

📚 This double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial looked at 100 women with PCOS undergoing IUI, and sought to better understand whether probiotics can be supportive to fertility outcomes.

🩷 IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination, which is a form of assisted reproductive technology often offered to women prior to moving forward with IVF.

What this group found was that women who took a 7-strain probiotic for 8 weeks prior to IUI had significantly thicker endometrial lining than the placebo group (9.6 mm vs. 9.0 mm; p=0.028).

This is really important! ✨

Endometrial thickness is a key element needed for implantation success. Although an improvement in pregnancy rates was not found to be statistically significant in this study, the authors noted a trend toward positive effect (It can be tricky to get clearcut stats when sample sizes are smaller!).

All that said, this study adds to growing evidence that gut microbiome health isn’t just about digestion, and will hopefully be a catalyst for larger trials exploring how microbiome support can improve reproductive outcomes in women with PCOS.

So how did the authors think the probiotics worked? They suggested that probiotics may support the gut-reproductive axis by:
🌿 Reducing systemic inflammation
🌿 Modulating estrogen metabolism (likely through the estrobolome!)
🌿 Creating a more favorable endometrial environment for implantation.

Not all probiotics are created equal!

As always, work with your provider to determine what’s right for your body before starting anything over the counter. 💊
