Hey there busy bee. This is a bee, on a sedum plant. I have been quiet here, as it’s been a challenge to know what to say, and how to respond to folks reactions. So- I’m taking my cue from this friend these days. Smell the flowers, prepare for winter, rest a bit. 🐝 👉🏻This post is my way of letting you all here on IG know I’m not attending this year.
Those in the world of typical jobs might call this a family medical leave. For someone like me, who runs a business, is self-employed and makes a living in the arts there’s no good phrase- it’s just a pause. I have decided to focus my energies on keeping myself healthy and strong to be the best support I can be for the person who has made the life I live possible. My mama’s time in the hospital revealed more things that needed attention and now we have changed paths. Life has a way of doing that, doesn’t it? So, instead of finding yet another frenzied gear to shift into to create all the pieces and all the parts I put into a giant show like Rhinebeck, I’m taking a pause, a gap year, a break. I know my focus is in the proper place. The festival has been very supportive and I plan on returning next year. I’m grateful for that, and will miss not being with all the wonderful folks in the magical “prom” that is Rhinebeck. 🧶🍁♥️ So, know potter is potting. Just at a slow pace. An almost glacial restorative pace where the making brings the calm. The wonderful place that creativity holds to sort, clear, and mend. No hustle here, just a lot of bee. 🐝

Neither clay nor studio content. I’ve been quiet here as I’m spending my energies focused on other things lately. Grateful for the quiet spaces and busy hands in other ways. An unexpected extended stay at the hospital for my dear mama. ❤️ A cascading domino of things making her recovery long and excruciatingly slow. I’m exceptionally grateful to have the time and space to be here with her and provide comfort in whatever way I can. Ever so pleased there are spaces to sit and reflect while waiting continues. 🌱🪡💕

New fun things! Mugs, of course with some crabs (it IS Maryland after all) but also these handbuilt dishes. Different shapes, totally fun to paint and carve and very useful shapes. These oval ones I affectionally refer to as a “food canoe” because, well so many things- I love food, I love canoes- It’s just SO FUN to say. What will you put in your psst- I posted some orders online too 🌈🦀🐏🛶😎

I know some folks think I have the coolest job. Turns out someone else has a waaay cooler job than me. Back to the studio after a glorious sheep filled break at a little slice of paradise is just magic. Being around sheep has to be one of my favorite things and it’s amazing to be around at lambing. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 10/10 I’m smitten with these little friends- Baa-bka and Bundt (and mama Ganache) ❤️❤️❤️
Now, to sort through all the inspiration and design for the next while dreaming of sheep

Here’s the finished spoon from my recent reels. I let it dry for a good long time before I slow bisque. I’ll poke a hole with my needle too l in the handle. However-This is totally unnecessary, if it is fired slowly will be just fine with air trapped. (I know I know…some folks will have issue with this- oh well not my experience) I’m choosing to poke a hole to let it dry a bit faster so I can move this through the ceramic process!

These beauties are some of my favorite “new” stuff that is porcelain fired in Sophie-Lu the gas kiln 🔥. The designs are carved with and slip trailed and pressed with homemade stamps. All to make pots that look like the things I like to knit, cuddle in and have as hand me downs from years of wooly love.🐑💚

Ah, it’s fall, and I’m in New York. It’s the most glorious of fall days. Set up the booth for , have already eaten two hot apple cider doughnuts and now a little r&r.🍎👩‍🍳😘Here’s a peek at part of this year’s mug. I used a variety of techniques on this design- this picture shows a watercolor wash on the carved leaves and tree. 🍁 The other side has a critter… and some knitting… 🤔I have a bunch of mugs at the show, and I’ll have some listings online Sat am for those who want to shop from home, or have their mug shipped. 😁
Now for a little rest (and maybe more cider doughnuts) before the storm of Rhinebeck begins! PS- Dear Mother Nature, that is not an invitation for more storms, please no rain for the next two days 😬 🤞🏻🌈☀️

Rainbow sheepy bowls. These small bowls are a favorite, this year with a bit of a twist. The backgrounds are colored slips from my new studio project. I tested hundreds of colors in all the kilns and this is the rainbow available at my booth 27A8 - outside near the 4H gate. I’ll be posting some orders online Saturday morning too for those folks who want me to ship, rather than carry pottery around or for those shopping from home! I have LOTS of rainbows this year on a wide variety of pots. #🌈

Latergram, show prep. The last few weeks have been an absolute blur of activity- a series of Groundhog days. Burning my candle at each end on repeat. 🕯️Sometimes life is just like that. When it is, I turn in and out my head down to get my work accomplished however I can, with whatever I can do. Some days it’s amazing what can happen, and some days other things take priority, and nothing is accomplished. All of this to say, life.
So, I’m headed east already for my two day drive across the Midwest to where I’ll set up my booth in my same place outside the 4H gate. Looking forward to seeing all the pretty yarns has shipped too. 🧶🤤I have lots of cool pots, and I’ll be posting some of the beauties over the next few days. Here’s a picture from my work table. Spiffy bottles all in a row. These bottles have helped me tremendously as I can quickly move between colors and apply detail pretty quickly. 🌈 I’m looking forward to seeing all the pretty things, wooly and people- and making a massive list of all the things I want to knit (but likely won’t have the focus to) 😬 and trading space in the bins now filled with pots with special goodies from the microeconomy of creatives and producers at

Tiles! Here’s a view of the first round of tiles before their bisque firing. 11 slip colors, different intensities on four clay bodies. 1/3 to the gas kiln for and 2/3 to the 🔥 The tiles are stamped and carved so we’ll have a view of what the slip looks and behaves like on the clay both glazed and unglazed- as well as how it behaves over texture like stamping. Love projects like this, and the results always lead to more tests.

Exciting news! has a new home. More students = more demand for space, and less space for the boss lady to do her own work. This gem of a building, in the BACKYARD of became available recently and now we have an exciting addition to the shop. I’ll be moving my studio space here, a few wheels for private lessons and small parties, and will have monthly sales in the former waiting room at the front of this former doctor’s office, turned dentist office, turned tattoo parlor. So happy to find a great gem so close to the current shop space still in . A wee bit of renovations on deck. Starting with the wallpaper. 💎

Good morning! Here’s a minute long video of some sheep. It’s a nice place holder to remember why we all attend these festivals. The sheep, our environment, and the stewardship of that. Each time you support a small business at these events, you make a vote for that. It’s a vote for small instead of big. All the farms and artists need as much love and support as we are able to give. This is the “industry” that makes the work I do feel important.
So, while it’s rainy, a bit cold, and dreary out here this weekend. Know that these business have worked for months - and for many it’s been years since they have been able to show their labors. Remember, it’s only rain, and you’re waterproof. 😉
Each season the grass will grow, the sheep will eat and in turn be shorn. Then we get to watch the magic of it all over again. ☔️🌱🐑🧶🌞
👋🏻see you all

In other fun pottery news- some beauties from ^10 gas kiln will be at the booth tomorrow. I have some amazing 👩‍🍳😘bowls and mugs-and these fun new candles. 🕯Impressed, carved and altered in all sorts of fascinating glazes. Some are filled with soy wax, and some with beeswax 🐝 I really enjoy making these little candles, and sometimes we all need some glow.

Crabby pile! Another fun design for When I make mugs for Maryland I love to doodle these crabs, and this design has the craving first with the color I laid on top. Big jumble pile of crab. 💙

This year I made a few special designs for . This design has both my sheepy and my blue crab pals and a special 3-d decoration. The yarn balls and crab eyes are what’s known as a sprig decoration. These parts are made by pressing clay into a mold I made and attaching them on top of the design at the green ware stage. The crab eyes are like googly 👀eyes, which make me 😃 Each creature has its own yarn and the two are connected in a tangle. I have a few different colorways of yarn and sheep- but always a blue crab for Maryland. 💙🦀💙 🧶 come visit me @ the main building D-21

It’s been a wet morning- and it seems like a wet weekend ahead. Happy to have a long enough drive to dry the little’s socks on the vent on the way in. Handspun sunshine on a wet day. 🧶🌞☔️

I have made things with clay for almost 30 years now. Still, to this very day opening kilns is like opening presents on Christmas morning. I love my job and am still absolutely smitten with clay and the community it brings and builds.
