As a PMHNP and a parent, I’ll admit it: I am guilty as charged of sometimes allowing my daughter a little too much screen time. Life gets busy, and it’s easy to fall into the habit of relying on devices to keep her entertained. But this past vacation, we made a conscious effort to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature—and it was nothing short of transformative.
Stepping away from screens and immersing ourselves in the outdoors gave us the chance to slow down, be present, and simply enjoy each other’s company. My daughter explored trails, splashed in the ocean, and discovered the wonders of the natural world. Watching her delight in these simple moments was a powerful reminder of the grounding effects that nature has for children—especially those with mental health needs or neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD.
🌿 Benefits of Nature Grounding for Kids with Mental Health Needs
Improves Focus:Â Spending time in nature has been shown to enhance attention and reduce symptoms of ADHD. The calming sensory input of natural environments can act as a reset for overstimulated minds.
Reduces Anxiety:Â Grounding exercises, such as walking barefoot on grass or holding a smooth stone, provide sensory input that helps regulate emotions.
Encourages Mindfulness: Nature inherently invites mindfulness—whether it’s noticing the rustle of leaves, the sound of birds, or the feel of a breeze. For kids (and adults!) with anxious or racing thoughts, this can be incredibly soothing.
Promotes Physical Activity:Â Running, climbing, and exploring builds physical health, which is directly connected to improved mental well-being.
This trip was a beautiful reminder that while screens might sometimes be a convenient tool, they’ll never replace the irreplaceable benefits of connecting with the great outdoors. I encourage all families to try grounding exercises or simply spend a little more time in nature.
No judgment here—we’re all doing the best we can as parents. But let’s remember that the simple act of unplugging can lead to moments that fill our hearts and recharge our souls. 🌳💚
