Can you say, “How are you?” in American Sign Language?

On World Hearing Day, Tjay Middlebrook, our health system’s accessibility coordinator, is teaching a few simple ASL phrases you can learn in minutes — and use for a lifetime.

Learning even a few signs can open doors to connection — at school, in your neighborhood or right here in our hospitals. Tjay works across our system to remove barriers for patients living with visible and invisible disabilities, helping create a more welcoming experience for every family we serve.

Modeling inclusion for our kids means they can carry it forward.

Save this to practice together — and share it with another family who’d love to learn.

A first for the Upper Midwest. A new future for pediatric heart care.

Lennox Staricha is the first infant in the region to receive a partial heart transplant. Our pediatric heart and transplant teams at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital performed the highly-specialized procedure using transplanted heart valves that will grow with him.

The family’s gratitude goes out to the care team, and the donor family who made the transplant possible. “The greatest day didn’t come without pain for another family,” said Roxann, Lennox’s mom. “We are so thankful for them. We appreciate them saving our baby.”
KARE 11 shares the full story. Check the link in our comments.

Doctors planned open-heart surgery for Lennox before he was even born. Then a last-minute scan changed everything: traditional surgery wouldn’t work.

So the team at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital reimagined what was possible.

Lennox became the first child in the Upper Midwest to receive a partial heart transplant using living donor valves — tissue designed to grow with him. Fewer than 60 of these procedures have been performed nationwide.

Today, his heart is growing stronger.

And because of him, more babies with complex congenital heart defects may have a new path forward. Read his story in the comments.

When the Minnesota Men's Basketball team entered the court on Sunday, their jersey’s reflected more than a roster. Each player wore the name of a special cancer patient from M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital as part of their “Ski-U-Mah Strong” initiative. The honored patients joined the players for special game-day experiences including a meet-and-greet with the players before the game and honors during half-time.

The initiative is part of the larger Coaches vs. Cancer initiative, an effort by the Cancer Society to raise awareness for cancer care and research. Thank you to the players and Coach Niko Medved for making this so meaningful for our patients and their families.

Ozzy Hentges, 2, was born with Down syndrome and later diagnosed with leukemia – news that could have left her family feeling overwhelmed and alone.

Instead, they found a community at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital.

The family was surrounded by nurses, specialists, who listened, showed up, and treated them as partners in care. They found fellow families who spoke their same language while navigating life in and out of the hospital. From the earliest days to the hardest moments, they were reminded again and again: they didn’t have to do this alone.

This is what it looks like when care becomes community. 💙

On Friday, a group of former Vikings players stopped by our children’s hospital with gifts from of Hope—gift baskets packed with toys, activities, stuffed animals and more. What followed was an afternoon of laughter, Roblox lessons, and even a surprise dance party in a patient’s room. 💜 Moments like these remind families they’re not alone.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
