A Tik Tok trend has teens tracking the UV index for tanning. “It’s incredibly alarming,” Cynthia Nicholson, MD, a pediatric dermatologist with M Health Fairview and University of Minnesota Medical School told WCCO & CBS News Minnesota . Prolonged sun exposure leads to greater risks of sunburns, premature aging, and skin cancer later in life.

The UV index is measured on a scale of 0 to 11+ (anything 11 or above is considered extreme):
⬇️ Below a 3, Nicholson says you should still wear sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
🕶 Between 3 and 7, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are a must.
🌡 Anything 9 or above? Stay inside if possible.

Athlete Tommy Schweinitz’s knee pain turned out to be Ewing sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. While receiving treatment at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital, the 17-year-old faced a life-altering decision: have his right leg removed or try and preserve it.

With support from his family and care team, he chose to amputate his leg believing he would have the best chance of the cancer not returning and give him more athletic opportunities in the future.

“Cancer took me out of pretty much everything,” Tommy said. “But at the same time, I feel like I was still in the loop, being active, and going places. I just did it without hair."

Now with treatment – and a tough decision behind him – Tommy is in a place to look to the future. Next stop: Playing a few holes at the 3M Open tomorrow!

“I’m the person who never gives up on anything.” Fourth grader Mila Halling recently returned to Minnesota after competing in the Braille Institute’s global Braille Challenge Finals competition in Los Angeles.

Mila was born with a rare condition called septo-optic dysplasia which affects her ability to see. She’s also receiving hormone replacement therapy for a rare condition known as panhypopit where the pituitary gland doesn’t produce all the hormones necessary for growth and development. Despite this, Mila’s family and care team at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital aren’t surprised she’s made it to the national stage. “We’re just so proud,” said mom Amanda. “Blindness doesn’t stop you from doing what you want to do.”

Seeing their son Will in a helmet wasn’t what first-time parents Alie and William Welch imagined for his first year. But new 3D-printed cranial remolding helmets available at M Health Fairview made their journey easier.

The new helmets are lighter, more breathable, and are more effective at treating head shape abnormalities than traditional helmets – meaning better outcomes for babies and less physical and emotional fatigue for parents. A difference they can see and feel every day. “I think we did the right thing by choosing this new helmet,” Alie said. KSTP-TV shares their story: https://mhfv.care/4ljDkZ9

There’s a social media trend where teens are “checking the UV” to time their tanning sessions.

But here’s the problem: The higher the UV, the greater the sun exposure which leads to greater risks of sunburns, premature aging, and potentially skin cancer. They can still use the UV index – just think protection rather than sunbathing.

☀️ UV 3 or higher? Seek shade and make sure to take precautions.

🧴 Sunscreen is essential – broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is best.

👒 Wear sun-protective shirts, hats, and sunglasses for added protection.

What do pollen, pets, and peanuts all have in common? They are common allergens for kids. While some are unlikely to be life-threatening, they are far from harmless.

Ryan Nelson, MD, PhD, a pediatric allergist/immunologist with M Health Fairview Pediatrics and an assistant professor with University of Minnesota Medical School answers parents’ most common questions about food, environmental, and pet allergies.

Regardless of the type of allergy, your first defense is avoidance, Nelson said. That could be avoiding certain foods, keeping a distance from furry pets, or spending more time indoors when outdoor pollen counts are high.
