Ouch! Sunburn got you feeling like a lobster? Don't worry, we've got you covered!
Did you know that treating a sunburn properly can significantly reduce pain and healing time? Here's your adult guide to soothing that angry skin:
1. Cool it down
Take a cool shower or apply cold compresses to ease the burn. You can use ice to make ice water for a cold compress, but don't apply ice directly to the sunburn.
2. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
After cooling, slather on some aloe vera or a fragrance-free moisturizer (but not petroleum or oil-based ointments, which may trap the heat and make the burn worse). Pro tip: Keep it in the fridge for extra relief!
3. Stay hydrated
Sunburns can be dehydrating because they draw fluid to the skin's surface and away from the rest of the body. Drink plenty of water and sports drinks to help your skin heal from the inside out.
4. Pop an anti-inflammatory
If it is safe for you to do so, take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation. Your skin will thank you!
5. Dress for success
Wear loose, soft clothing to avoid irritating your skin further.
6. Hands off!
Resist the urge to peel or pop any blisters. Let your skin heal naturally.
7. See a Doctor if...
You should seek medical help if you have severe blistering over a large portion of your body, have a fever and/or chills, or if you are feeling dizzy or confused.
Remember, prevention is always better than cure. Next time, don't forget your sunscreen! ☀️
