Our Innovation Fellows Program is training future leaders, from physicians to entrepreneurs to engineers 💪 ⚙️

“Our fellows collaborate with University experts in needs-finding, brainstorming, and grant proposals. Fellows learn how to use a variety of prototyping tools through a series of fun exercises,” says IFP Director Danny Sachs.

Since our inaugural cohort in 2008, IFP has trained 91 fellows, with 9 new fellows joined the program in the summer. While the program’s mission is innovation training, start-up ventures have emerged from it, including companies like Stimdia Medical and Aria CV.

Last month, we celebrated Founding Director Dr. Art Erdman's 80th birthday 🥳

Over his career, he has founded BMDC at the University along with the Design of Medical Devices Conference, has filed numerous device patents and consulted for over 50 companies, has led the effort to create LINCAGES, a mechanism software design package that has been use worldwide, and has taught and mentored over a thousand students. Recently, last spring, Dr. Erdman was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

At BMDC, he started a garage band with the faculty, staff, and students that continues to hold weekly practices. At the University's Men's Crew, Dr. Erdman was named head coach for 5 years in 1973. That year, he led Minnesota lightweights to win the Canadian Henley Men's Lightweight 8+ and Minnesota participates in the inaugural Midwest Rowing Championships - VL4+ to win gold, VL8+ and Open 4- to win silver. In 2018, he was honored by Minnesota Men's Crew with the naming of an 8 person crew shell, "Dr. Art Erdman".

Thank Dr. Erdman for the impact you have made and continue to make at University of Minnesota 👏
