Every day across our health system, over 9,600 nurses deliver care that shapes better outcomes – from nationally recognized safety performance to consistent high-quality patient experiences.

These aren’t just system achievements. They are the result of daily decisions to lead with compassion, expertise, and a commitment to care.

Nurses like Amy Johnson exemplify this work. Her 50-year career with Fairview reflects a legacy of care, mentorship, and defining what excellence in nursing looks like. Read her story and more in our 2025 Nursing Annual Report. 👇

At M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital, the EmPATH unit was designed to be different from the start. A calm, living room – like space where people experiencing a mental health crisis can get the support they need outside of the traditional emergency department setting.
Five years later, that vision is making a difference. EmPATH has helped 10,000 people in crisis, reducing inpatient hospitalizations from 40% to 6%.

"It offers a lot more independence. And for people in mental health, that's really important because part of what we want to do is help people to help themselves too and feel like they can do it," said Madeline Mulcahy, EmPATH therapist.

WCCO & CBS News Minnesota shares the story in the comments.

Quynh Nguyen picked up a free naloxone kit at work. Days later, she used it to save a life.

Quynh – a medical scribe at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center – West Bank – recognized the signs of an overdose in her neighbor. She acted quickly, using naloxone and starting CPR until emergency responders arrived.

“I'm just thinking to myself, how grateful I am to have that kit,” Nguyen shared. “I'm seeing far too many young lives being claimed by overdose when literally there's a life-saving kit that can fit in any purse.”

Naloxone kits are available free of charge, no questions asked at nine M Health Fairview clinics and hospitals across Minnesota.

Today’s Donate Life flag raisings at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Centers - East and West Bank, are a tribute to organ donors who gave the ultimate gift of life. The ceremony honors the donors, their families, the physicians, nurses, and care teams who support transplantation.

“This lifesaving work is made possible through the dedication of our interdisciplinary teams across our health system.” – Erin Schaden, nurse manager of our Donor Care Unit.

Across our health system during April, these ceremonies will recognize the lives saved, the legacies carried on, and the heroes behind every organ donation.
Tap 💚 to help us honor organ donors, their families, and their grateful recipients.

When 10-year-old Camille drew a picture asking for help finding a kidney donor for her dad, Brian Zenner, her family shared it with hope but no expectations.

A stranger said yes. Through a paired kidney exchange, Jennifer Aspen donated her kidney to someone in need on behalf of Brian. In return, he received a kidney from a compatible donor. Both surgeries took place at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center, home of one of the oldest and successful transplant programs in the world.

Now, Brian and Jennifer are both recovering well. And two families are forever connected.

When endoscopy nurse Taylor Hastings asked her dates about colonoscopies on Love is Blind, she got a lot of laughs. But she also raised awareness.

In a recent Star Tribune feature, Taylor joined Francisco Ramirez, supervisor of community education and outreach at M Health Fairview to help shift how we talk about colorectal cancer, colonoscopies, and how our health system is expanding access to lifesaving screenings.

Early detection and ensuring everyone has access to colonoscopy screenings is crucial to preventing cancer.

Let’s normalize the conversation. Read more in our comments.

Five years ago, we reimagined what emergency mental health care could look like.

For therapists like Madeline Mulcahy, MSSW, LICSW, that vision comes to life every day in EmPATH at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital. “Every person who comes into EmPATH is met with support,” Mulcahy said. “Our team helps them move from that initial moment of uncertainty to a place where they feel safe, understood, and ready for what comes next.” It’s a model built around people, not just processes.

Since 2021, our EmPATH teams have helped over 10,000 patients experiencing a mental health crisis by connecting them to the right care when they need it, reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and repeat hospital visits.

Demand for trauma support training is rising in the Twin Cities. In response to this growing need, our teams are expanding psychological first aid and trauma-informed training. It’s our way of equipping staff and community partners with tools to recognize distress, respond with empathy, and support healing in real time.

We recently trained 215 teachers from Minneapolis Public Schools to help them support their students in the moments they need them most. KSTP-TV shares more about this work in our comments.

Cheryl Chapman, a unit coordinator at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital, supports families who are grieving the loss of a loved one in ICUs across our system. For 18 years Cheryl – along with family, friends, and volunteers – have created nearly 6,000 handmade quilts, giving families who’ve experienced a loss comfort they can hold.

The quilts are made with intention. Each are chosen to reflect the life and personality of the loved one.

“It’s all about what we can do for others in this life,” Cheryl said.

Through M Health Fairview’s free colonoscopy program, more than 500 Minnesotans have received life-saving screenings—removing barriers, expanding access, and finding cancer early when it matters most.

“I waited for a long time because I felt worried about my health, and when I got this opportunity [to receive a free colon cancer screening] it was something marvelous for me,” one participant said. “Even better when it was done, and I got results that said everything was ok. All of my fear and worry went away.”

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Screening can prevent cancer before it starts.

500 screenings is just the beginning. Learn more in the comments.
