Located in the heart of Minneapolis, Lake Street possesses a variety of exceptional businesses such as restaurants, shopping venues, clinics and more. These wonderful locations have been offering their services to Lake Street for many years. A multitude of us are aware, the last two years have been extremely hard as we’ve faced an array of harsh challenges. Of which include the pandemic, that caused many of our beloved businesses on Lake Street to shut down and the unjust killing of George Floyd. Situations such as these can take a toll on our mental health as they continue to affect us.

Under the new program launched by Lake Street Council, Healing Path Wellness Clinic is providing FREE mental health counseling services at no out-of-pocket cost to Lake Street business owners. With free and confidential mental health counseling, business owners can use the program to help overcome challenges facing their lives and ultimately improve their wellbeing!

According to the CDC, su***de takes the lives of over 48,500 Americans every year and it is the 10th leading cause of death in the country.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, to help fight against su***de stigma it is imperative that we raise awareness by getting involved with local organizations, utilizing social media to educate others and listen to those that need help. Collaborating together to develop our understanding and awareness of mental health issues will aid us in making our preventative efforts more effective. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, call the National Su***de Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255).

Several Black therapists lost offices in riots as their clients needed them most.

In today’s historic vote, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners declared racism a public health crisis.

Due to racism, Black, Indigenous and People of Color in Hennepin County statistically have poorer educational outcomes, earn less, and are less likely to own homes or have access to quality health care and jobs than white people. These disparities have lifelong impacts, including higher disease rates, and, as we’re seeing now, higher rates of COVID-19.

Declaring racism a public health crisis will lift up our work of developing strategies that mitigate personal bias and prejudice in our community, create systems that build equity, and reach our vision of a future where all residents are healthy and successful and all communities thrive.

Hennepin County is not the first to declare racism as a public health crisis, and we will not be the last. There is a worldwide movement for equity. This is a call for more action and more justice.

“ A public health nurse, Sulekha started Healing Path in 2018 to serve immigrants and people of color to seek treatment that she said is often stigmatized in their communities. The clinic offers culturally specific treatment that doesn’t always rely on traditional mental health techniques, she said. It also focuses on building trust with patients through help outside of the clinic by providing them with resources like transportation.

Patients at Healing Path Wellness Services, an independent mental health clinic located on East Lake Street just under a mile west of Midtown Eye Clinic, also didn’t adapt to video appointments well during the pandemic. Healing Path served as a resource hub for the community in its physical location, providing a space for the community to access resources and connect with providers in person. Online visits were not a good fit for the clinic’s mission, said Sulekha Ibrahim, Healing Path’s founder.”

Lost COVID-19 revenue and the Lake Street fires are turning immigrant neighborhoods in south Minneapolis into health care deserts. The outcome for patients? “Their chronic conditions are getting, frankly, worse.”
