It’s live! I’ve spent the last month creating a Patreon subscription library. It’s currently got over 20 pilates and yoga classes up, and I’ll be adding about three per week for the foreseeable future.

It’s also got sections for recipes, blogs, and activism action prompts; plus a Discord-like community chat room. Coming soon: meditation with music by my sister’s kid!

Tl;dr: I’m starting a subscription service with a library of recorded classes and monthly live virtual gatherings.

My friends! 😍 Many of you know that I started offering movement classes on Zoom during the early months of the pandemic. Some of you know that I never stopped, and still do three classes a week (two pilates mat, one yoga). A few of you know that from time to time, I go on a streak of recording them, with the intention of starting a subscription library.

I am excited to announce that only a few years after everyone got sick to death of practicing on screens, I’m finally starting a Patreon. 😝

Obviously, I’m hoping to supplement my income with this— it’s gonna be a lot of work— but the main driver that has led me to finally get moving on it is the feeling that I need to do something to bring people together and lift people up, and this is the area where I have the expertise to lead and empower others. I hope you’ll join me, and help to remind each other that JOY IS RESISTANCE.

I’m currently editing videos (only to trim the community chats at the beginning and end— otherwise all my human blunders, forgotten words, and bad jokes will remain intact) and am hoping to launch April 1.

You may know that both Pilates and yoga focus heavily on body-mind-spirit connection. It feels to me that in this surreal moment in our country, we need to strengthen all that, and lean into community connection, too. If you know me, you know that I do not and will not (and possibly could not 😝) separate my political opinions from my business, and you will see that reflected in this service. Here are some things I’ll be offering.

💪🏻💪🏽💪🏿For the body, I’ll be:

-consistently recording and uploading new Zoom classes, up to 12/month
-recording some “detours” (short, micro-workshops on particular skills to enhance your movement practice)
-sharing nourishing recipes, like my semi-famous chicken bone broth, my favorite high-protein breakfast/energy bars, and many other favorites

🧠🤓👩🏻‍🔬For the mind, I’ll enjoy:
-providing book recommendations/discussions (including fun fiction!)
-suggesting action steps
-sharing relevant gift articles from reliable news sources that I support with subscription

📿🙏🔮For the spirit, I’ll be honored to:
-create guided meditations
-shine a spotlight on good news of the moment

👋🤝🤛For community:

-I’ll host a monthly live virtual gathering, which will vary in theme. It might be a Pilates or yoga or stretch or foam roller class; some months it might be a meditation. You might see a book club pop up once in a while. Some months we might gather and all write postcards together, or plan a discussion group around a particular topic.
-I’m offering sliding scale pricing

I hope you’ll join me for this experiment— please let me know which of these things excite you, and if there’s anything else you’d like to see on offer! Details on pricing and how to sign up will come as we get closer. 🥳

Sajan is a college-level athlete who’s been coming to do a few sessions with me at the beginning of baseball season most years since he was in high school. This year, we did eight lessons in a month while he was home for winter break. We were able to really get our teeth into some advanced Pilates exercises, including Around the World on the short box, shown here.

He’s a pitcher, and his goals for the month were to work on spinal flexibility, particularly extension; “holding deep positions” (The One Hundred, anyone? 😈); strength and balance on one leg; and strengthening obliques and cross-body core to “make his body a slingshot”— thereby lessening strain on the shoulder without losing power on the throw.

Every year when he comes back, it’s clear that he’s worked on and mastered the skills we introduced the year before. It’s been so fun to see this hardworking kid grow as an athlete, and as a person.

♊️ It’s Gemini season, y’all!!

It’s funny how many of my clients are geminis, like me. I thought it would be fun to share some of them in action, on their birthdays… or near their birthdays, because I’m an air sign, after all. 😝

Here’s Debi, whose strength and consistency are evident here in Standing Front Splits, and who celebrated her birthday last week. Gorgeous! 🥰

Sometimes I mix n match my equipment because my house is a playground. 😂 This Becky Original take on Swan I from the reformer frankensteins the tower and the ladder barrel, and is awesome for getting into the hamstrings and core while stabilizing the shoulders and using your own power to decompress the spine. Heck yeah, Emily! 🤩

Check out Emily’s gorgeous teaser breakthrough!

During my own lesson with on Tuesday, we talked a lot about diaphragmatic breathing, and I worked on letting go of obsession with trying to make my belly appear flat— which hasn’t been a possibility for me for some years now, anyway. When I allowed my outer belly to soften, I was able to better access the transverse abdominis, and get my spine to bend in a place it often doesn’t like to bend. It felt like more than a Pilates breakthrough; it felt, in a way, like radical feminist rebellion. Letting my rolls roll gave me power, while trying to hide them has only hampered my mobility.

Since then, every client I’ve seen has gotten a lecture about the diaphragm, and each one so far has benefited from this concept of softening the outer flesh of the belly. This is a good reminder of why we, as teachers, keep up our own practice, with our own teachers. There’s always more to learn, and always a new perspective around the corner.

I like my movement with a side of subversiveness, and in that spirit, I encourage you to get comfy with your rolls and edges, even if they’re not the rolls and edges society has taught you to want. Find the joy in movement, recognize your strength, and appreciate all that your body can do.

NEW TOY!! 🥳🤩

This was my first time hopping on— too excited to change out of my pajamas, but isn’t that the joy of being a “fitness professional”? Who even knows if we’re dressed for work or freshly rolled out of bed? The uniform is half of what I love about this work. 😁

Like many of us, I have a pretty traumatized neck. Special to me, I have unusually short arms, which means I have to flex my spine to get into the traditional yoga sirsasana— not ideal. I can do tripod arms no problem, but I couldn’t believe how freeing it felt to be in a headstand not only without worrying about my neck, but to actually have my cervical vertebrae in gravity-induced traction. Also— wheeee!!! 🎉

Katie Mardis can’t bear to miss her weekly TRX workout, even when we’re both awaiting PCR test results. (We did both have negative antigen tests.) How lovely of Minnesota to give us a 50-degree day at the tail end of November! 😝

Did you know I also co-own a retreat business, Global CitiZen Retreats? We’re going to Mexico in late January, and you could join us for mindful movement overlooking the ocean… there’s seriously nothing like it. 🥰
