✨ Last week I had the gift of time on Ihotu’s table at The Oshun Center for Intercultural Healing . It’s hard to put into words how grounding and restorative my time was, it felt like floating in the clouds ☁️ while being tethered to the core of the Earth.

Ihotu is such an incredibly skilled healer, with an amazing mix of skill, wisdom, and intuition. I can’t recommend booking with her enough. 💖

This fur brother was the perfect assistant during a recent home visit! 🏡 At TCM, we encourage and celebrate our clients being surrounded by love and support throughout their care and birth, and that includes the fur babies.

• Do you have photos of your animals helping a midwife?
• Maybe that first meet with baby?
• Or even just a ridiculously cute shot that has nothing to do with birth but is so cute you need us to see it?!

Drop your photos in the comments! This request comes straight from Midwife Kayla + Admin Director Emily, your resident furry friend lovers. 💕🐾

Thank you Have Heart Doula and Lactation Services for capturing these!

August 25th-31st is Black Breastfeeding Week, a week dedicated to honoring, uplifting, and empowering Black chestfeeding parents and recognizing the impact of systemic oppression on Black families.

Here we highlight just a few reasons why we need Black Breastfeeding Week, though our advocacy continues year-round. Why else do you think we need Black Breastfeeding Week?

[1: Background is a photo of a Black parent tucked in blankets chestfeeding their infant. White text reads, “It’s Black Breastfeeding Week. Here are 4 reasons why we need it.” A white arrow points to the right. The Birthing Advocacy Instagram handle is in the top left corner, and share and save icons are in the bottom corners.
Images 2-6 show a beige background with black text, a grey BADT raised fist logo in the bottom right, and the same Instagram handle and share and save icons.
2: Disparities in lactation rates: 57.2% of Black people are chestfeeding after 10 weeks compared to 73.4% of white people and 80.6% of Asian people.
3: Impacts of oppression: The history of wet nursing is essential in understanding the current Black bodyfeeding rates in the U.S. During slavery, enslaved Black birthing people were forced to bodyfeed the children of their captors with the expectation of deprioritizing the needs of their own children. The generational impact and trauma of this history is still felt today.
4: The high Black infant mortality rate: Black infants are dying at more than twice the rate of white infants. This disparity did not lessen from 2022-2023 (CDC).
5: Lack of diversity in the lactation field: Less than 2% of U.S. IBCLCs identify as Black, which reduces access to culturally congruent lactation care.
6: Black families deserve better. Why do you think we need Black Breastfeeding Week? Let us know in the comments.]

Such a joy to help lead home birth simulation drills and debriefs with the Bethel University CNM program this morning! ✨ Always an honor (and so much fun!) to join alongside Taneesha Douglas, MSN, MBA, CNM and Diane Banigo, DNP, CNM in their wonderful program. And what a fantastic group of Bethel University Nursing Department - St. Paul, MN. CNM students!

I especially love how they begin their interpretive unit with normal birth. I’m grateful that, in my work as a midwife, I get to walk with families through healthy, low-risk pregnancies and births… which means that most of what I witness and hold space is normal birth.

Loved getting connect with a few of our Gather & Grow: A Connected Parenting Series 💕 We reflected on big-picture intentions and life directions, while also celebrating peace and joy in the present moment.

It's incredible the depth of relationships that have been built in just a 12-week virtual program! We still connect regularly via Marco Polo and Signal, and it is always a treat when a few of us are able to connect!

Our fall cohort will be kicking off mid-September 🍂 and we still have spots left! For more information: twincitiesmidwifery.com/gather
