"Process Arts is a different way of approaching your art making. It involves a way of being with your creative process and your life that encourages presence, emotional awareness and courage. It focuses on igniting your inner creative flame, intuition, authenticity, and the process rather than technique or end product. You can expect play, group interaction, strengthened intuition, experimentation, new discoveries, break-throughs in stagnant corners, and art that is alive and connected to your story. The techniques learned shine a light on your engagement with your life and may give you new…" (follow link to learn more)

Our Monday Morning DBT group is back after a summer break. It is an incredible way to start the week- with community, mindfulness, check in and skills learning! Today we taught the TIPP skill (a favorite of many) for distress tolerance during a crisis. Kira & Tayler, co-honors and therapists learn so much from facilitating the group and are honored to be part of the community! Try TIPP this week and see how it makes you feel.

We are a team of therapists who all work together. By having a non-hierarchical model, the therapists at Phoenix Mental Health support each other and enable each other to do our best work.

At many agencies, high workloads and restrictions on the type of work allowed make it hard for therapists to do good work, but our office environment is non-toxic, making it beneficial for both therapists and clients.

Over the last year, I've learned that, now more than ever, protecting your immune system is one way to help yourself and others. Good nutrition, sleep, and doing things to respond to stressors in positive, helpful ways bolster your immunity to all illness and disease.

I've found these tips can help you prioritize your mental health and well-being:

- If you find yourself caught up in worried thoughts, stop and take several deep breaths. Refocus your attention on the present moment, noticing the sights, smells, and sounds around you.
- Take comfort in simple routines – i.e. water your plants, practice good sleep hygiene, sit down for healthy meals, write in a journal, make your bed each morning. Routine and ritual help us to feel more grounded and can put our minds at ease.
- Start a project or activity you’ve been wanting to get to at home – i.e. reorganize your kitchen, clean out your closet, start that painting, read a great novel, binge watch some comedy, play games with your kids/partner/friends, write a letter or call a loved one on the phone.
- Spend time outside and soak up the sights and sounds of Spring. Exercise, fresh air and Vitamin D greatly reduce stress and improve our mood.
- Practice gratitude and mindfulness. Washing your hands is a great time to slow down and take several deep breaths, or say a short blessing such as “May I be safe, may I be healthy, may I have peace of mind… May we be safe, may we be healthy, may we have peace of mind”.
- Limit your news and social media exposure. We all need time to unplug and recharge.
- Follow Mr. Roger’s advice to “look for the helpers” and find yourself moved by the many, inspiring ways people are caring for others.
- Let this time be a reminder of our shared humanity and inter-connectedness and, above all, be kind to yourselves and others.

Looking for activities to connect with your family this weekend?

- Share weekly cooking responsibilities and include your children.
- Have your children go through their toys, rooms and other “stuff.” Declutter some spaces.
- Draw pictures and make cards for friends and loved ones. Send them in the mail.
- Go on nature walks and collect treasures for a home nature table or a new backyard fairy garden.
- Sing and make music together.
- Make a mud kitchen in your yard for some outdoor fun (for younger children).

Most of all, enjoy connecting with each other.

As a therapist, business owner and mother of small children, part of my daily work is caring for myself!

I continue to learn personally and in my work as a therapist that we cannot pour from an empty cup, and that by taking care of ourselves, we are going to be better able to be effective caregivers for others.

This year I set the goal of doing one fun outdoor activity each week without my children. In the winter I attempted to go cross country skiing or ice skating weekly, and I am thankful to be in the summer season, when I try to go paddling on a lake every week!

How can you take time for yourself and fill your cup this week?

One of the benefits of working from home this year has been the ability to be more physically active and engaged with the environment around me. Walking, gardening, observing nature or chatting with neighbors has been a welcomed balance to work.

Therapy can be a place where many experience concentrated self-reflection and emotional processing. Equally as important to inner work are the daily activities that support change: sleep, movement, safety, nourishment, social connection, sunlight, and creativity.

Our Story

We know that people are hurting right now. We know that the Coronavirus is scary and that this is unlike anything many of us have experienced before. We know that everything about it is undermining many of our connections and natural coping skills. We don’t know how or when any of that will change, but WE ALSO KNOW HOW TO FIND A SENSE OF SAFETY AND JOY WITHIN THIS DIFFICULT CONTEXT AND WE ARE HERE TO HELP.

We are continuing psychotherapy with our existing clients, welcoming former clients back and ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. Please let us know if you would like support in this difficult time. Our therapists have extended their hours and availability because of increased community need and we will be using TELEHEALTH to meet with clients looking to cope with everything relating to the Coronavirus pandemic or anything else.

Using Telehealth we can…
