Woodstone Inc. is installing the air ducts that will keep the Menaandawiwe Wellness Campus comfy year-round: warm air when winter hits ❄️ and cool air when summer shows up ☀️.

Those shiny ducts you’re seeing? That’s the building’s future airflow highway, quietly doing the work so our community can focus on care, wellness, and connection.

Swipe through to see how it’s happening (and yes… we’re oddly proud of this duct work). 💨🛠️

Staff Spotlight: Mary Youtsey, CDCES
Meet Mary Youtsey, Indian Health Board’s Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). Mary offers patient-centered support for people living with diabetes. Mary is an excellent resource, helping you understand your numbers, build day-to-day routines that actually fit your life, and navigate things like medications, supplies, and follow-up care with your provider.

People sometimes wonder how a CDCES is different from a dietitian. A dietitian focuses primarily on nutrition and meal planning, while a CDCES supports the full picture of diabetes self-management, meaning education, treatment routines, and care coordination. Many folks benefit from working with both, and we’ll help connect you to the right support.

Mary earned her nursing degree from the University of Utah and brings 25 years of experience from the VA. Now she's here at IHB for our community. 💙

✨ New year. New glow. ✨

You might notice our future Medical & Dental Center looking a little dotted 👀
Those marks show where exterior light fixtures will soon be installed, designed to light up the building at night and help this space shine for the community.

As we step into the new year, construction continues to move forward, bringing us closer to opening doors to a welcoming, healing space rooted in care, culture, and community.

Stay tuned, this building is about to glow up!

Artist Spotlight: Giizh Agaton Howes

We wanted to share a little more about the artist behind the design elements taking shape on our future medical and dental clinic.

Giizh Agaton Howes is an Anishinaabe artist and the founder of Heart Berry, a Native-owned design studio rooted in Ojibwe floral traditions, storytelling, and relationships to land and community. Giizh’s work translates these concepts into contemporary design, connecting cultural knowledge with modern spaces.

For our Menaandawiwe Wellness Campus, Giizh is working in close collaboration with DSGW Architecture to bring Indigenous design to life as an integrated part of the building itself. Not just as decoration, but as identity. Together, they are bringing Ojibwe floral motifs into the clinic’s exterior and interior elements, ensuring the space reflects care, belonging, and cultural continuity.

The name Heart Berry comes from Ode’imin—the Ojibwe word for strawberry—a plant that carries teachings of love, generosity, and leading from the heart. Those teachings guide Giizh’s creative practice and are deeply aligned with the values of Indian Health Board.

As construction continues, we’re excited to see these designs emerge. Miigwetch to the artists and architects that are helping to transform our building and community!

Learn more about Giizh and Heart Berry at heartberry.com.

Minnesota winters can be unpredictable. Taking a few extra steps can help keep you, your family, and our community safe on the road.

Prepare your vehicle
Check your tires, battery, lights, and fluids before heading out.

Pack a winter emergency kit
Include blankets, gloves, food, water, a flashlight, and a phone charger.

Slow down
Snow and ice reduce traction. Give yourself extra time and space.

Avoid sudden stops and sharp turns
Brake gently and steer smoothly to maintain control.

If you get stuck, stay in your vehicle
Turn on hazard lights and call for help when it’s safe to do so.

Indian Health Board wishes you a safe and healthy winter season.
