Minnesota Midwives of American College of Nurse Midwives

Minnesota Midwives of American College of Nurse Midwives Welcome to the Minnesota Midwives of the American College of Nurse-Midwives! ACNM is the national organization that represents CNMs and CMs in the USA.

Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are licensed healthcare practitioners educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery and are certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board. They provide primary healthcare to women of childbearing age including: prenatal care, labor and delivery care, care after birth, gynecological exams, newborn care, assistance with family planning decisions,

preconception care, menopausal management and counseling in health maintenance and disease prevention. CNMs must complete a graduate level education program that is nationally accredited, must pass a rigorous national certification exam, and in Minnesota, CNMs must maintain their RN licensure. Nurse-midwives practice in public clinics, hospitals, birth centers, homes, and private practices. The heart of midwifery care is the philosophy that pregnancy, birth, and transitions through life’s stages are normal events. Midwifery care focuses on safe, personalized, and evidence-based care with an emphasis on the woman as an active partner in her own health. Certified nurse-midwives have been practicing in Minnesota since 1971 with the first midwifery practice established at Hennepin County Medical Center in 1975.

•There are approximately 219 CNMs currently practicing in Minnesota.
•Minnesota has 123 Nurse-Midwifery services
•In 2004, Minnesota CNMs attended 5,801 births, which is 11% of all births in MN for that year.
•There is a graduate program in Nurse-Midwifery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. For more information, click here.
•MN legislation mandates third-party reimbursement for nurse-midwifery care, provides for joint underwriting authority for CNM malpractice insurance, and gives CNMs prescription writing privileges.

The Minnesota Affiliate of ACNM affirms and echoes ACNMs statement:

“the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), we stand in solidarity with efforts to eliminate inequities in reproductive health and to improve outcomes for Black women and birthing people. Midwives play a critical role in advancing respectful, evidence-based, and person-centered care across the lifespan.
We are committed to expanding access to midwifery care, strengthening culturally responsive practice, and advocating for systems that honor the voices, choices, and lived experiences of Black families. Together with partners across the maternal health community, we work toward a future where every person receives safe, equitable, and compassionate care.

It's Black Maternal Health Week and Black maternal health matters!

Let's talk about the facts!

Did you know:

🚩The maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women is nearly 3.5 times the rate for non-Hispanic White women

🚩 Maternal deaths decreased from 2022 to 2023 for all racial/ethnic groups except for Black women

🚩 The rate of preterm birth among Black women is about
1.5 times higher than the rate of preterm birth among white or Hispanic women

🚩 Black women have the highest prevalence of preeclampsia and eclampsia, experiencing these disorders at rates five times higher than their white counterparts

🚩 Approximately 20% of women report experiencing mistreatment during maternity care, with women of color disproportionately affected. 30% of Black women, 29% of Hispanic women, and 27% of multiracial women reported mistreatment, according to a 2023 CDC report.

📣Research shows that Black perinatal providers are uniquely equipped to provide
culturally congruent care that improves maternal and infant health outcomes among
Black women and birthing people.

Let's strengthen Black maternal health care!

Black Maternal Health Week 2026 starts tomorrow! Support our colleagues of color!

We acknowledge the maternal health outcomes disparities for our patients of color and strive to improve them across the state.

We recognize that Black perinatal providers are uniquely equipped to provide culturally congruent care that improves maternal and infant health outcomes among Black women and birthing people, and we recognize that Minnesota needs a stronger, more culturally diverse and culturally congruent perinatal healthcare workforce to improve Black maternal health in our state.

We appreciate the hard work and dedication our colleagues of color provide for the people and families they serve, often caring for patients and families disproportionately affected by systemic racism, and facing higher risks of experiencing poor health outcomes. Again this year, we’re showing our support of our perinatal providers of color by providing a free bodywork session for Minnesota midwives, student midwives and obstetricians of color in celebration of Black Maternal Health Week!

Please consider chipping in to help provide a bodywork session for a colleague of color by making a donation to the Black Bodywork Fund today. All donations will help cover the cost of a massage (or other therapy) for midwifery/OB providers of color at the Oshun Center for Intercultural Healing or at another location for those outside the Twin Cities metro area.

Attention all perinatal providers: The Minnesota Department of Health is conducting a brief survey of prenatal care providers to better understand current practices, knowledge, and perspectives regarding cytomegalovirus (CMV) during pregnancy. Your responses will be used to inform educational initiatives and improve clinical guidance related to CMV in pregnancy.

The survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete, and all responses will remain confidential.

You may access the survey here: Prenatal Care Provider Needs Assessment: Congenital CMV https://redcap.health.state.mn.us/redcap/surveys/?s=8T8PT4W3NK3A3YCC
