Minnesota Midwives of American College of Nurse Midwives

Minnesota Midwives of American College of Nurse Midwives Welcome to the Minnesota Midwives of the American College of Nurse-Midwives! ACNM is the national organization that represents CNMs and CMs in the USA.

Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are licensed healthcare practitioners educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery and are certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board. They provide primary healthcare to women of childbearing age including: prenatal care, labor and delivery care, care after birth, gynecological exams, newborn care, assistance with family planning decisions, preconception care, menopausal management and counseling in health maintenance and disease prevention. CNMs must complete a graduate level education program that is nationally accredited, must pass a rigorous national certification exam, and in Minnesota, CNMs must maintain their RN licensure. Nurse-midwives practice in public clinics, hospitals, birth centers, homes, and private practices. The heart of midwifery care is the philosophy that pregnancy, birth, and transitions through life’s stages are normal events. Midwifery care focuses on safe, personalized, and evidence-based care with an emphasis on the woman as an active partner in her own health. Certified nurse-midwives have been practicing in Minnesota since 1971 with the first midwifery practice established at Hennepin County Medical Center in 1975.

•There are approximately 219 CNMs currently practicing in Minnesota.
•Minnesota has 123 Nurse-Midwifery services
•In 2004, Minnesota CNMs attended 5,801 births, which is 11% of all births in MN for that year.
•There is a graduate program in Nurse-Midwifery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. For more information, click here.
•MN legislation mandates third-party reimbursement for nurse-midwifery care, provides for joint underwriting authority for CNM malpractice insurance, and gives CNMs prescription writing privileges.

ACNM Statement on the United States’ Withdrawal from the World Health Organization
The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is deeply concerned by the United States’ decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO plays a critical role in advancing global public health, coordinating responses to health emergencies, setting evidence-based standards of care, and supporting maternal and newborn health worldwide.
Midwives are essential to achieving safe, equitable, and high-quality care across the lifespan. Through WHO, the global midwifery community collaborates to strengthen health systems, improve workforce capacity, reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths, and respond effectively to emerging public health threats. United States’ participation has long contributed to scientific expertise, leadership, and resources that benefit both global and domestic health outcomes.
At a time when the US continues to face a maternal health crisis and widening health inequities, disengagement from global health leadership undermines opportunities for shared learning, coordinated action, and evidence-based policy development. Global health is inseparable from national health; infectious disease preparedness, workforce development, and best practices in maternity care transcend borders.
ACNM urges policymakers to reconsider this decision and to reaffirm the US’ commitment to international collaboration in health. We remain steadfast in our mission to support midwives, advance the practice of midwifery, and achieve optimal, equitable health outcomes and we will continue to work with partners at home and abroad to protect the health of individuals, families, and communities.

"For those who do not live in Minnesota, I cannot begin to explain the terror that our communities are experiencing right now.

Throughout history, we have seen the innate abilities of midwives to rally and mobilize to meet the needs of their communities. It gives me a glimmer of hope to see this happening in real time: midwives, nurses, physicians, doulas and more collaborating to meet our patient's needs." - Minnesota ACNM Co-President Lizi Seefeldt

Lizi stood alongside nearly two dozen healthcare providers on
January 20th 2026 at a press conference to discuss the very real and concerning obstructions to care caused by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents in Minnesota health care settings.
