Yoga Mama offers Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga and Fitness classes in Northeast Minneapolis. Each class will include pranayama (focus on breath), asana (yoga postures and movement) and will emphasize a connection between mind and body. Classes will also offer mamas-to-be a sense of community and an opportunity to connect with other women in the neighborhood in a similar stage of life. "Giving birth and being born brings us into the essence of creation. Where the human spirit is courageous and bold, and the body a miracle of wisdom." -Harriet Hartigan

Repost from Mina Families: Mother is a verb. It means to protect, to give care to. Mother as a verb brings out the best of us. It inspires our collective compassion. To protect and give care to -- not just the humans who are the most precious and beloved to us -- but to our communities as a whole.

Mother’s Day can be joyful, worthy and celebratory. For many fortunate people, it is. We see you. And we honor and celebrate you.

But for some of us, Mother’s Day can sting or ache, filled with longing to be pregnant or give birth or waiting for our adoption call. Or grieving lost children, born and unborn, disappointed by strained relationships with our own mother or child. It can be excruciatingly painful. We see you. And we honor and hold space for that.

On this day, we celebrate Mother as a Verb -- and all the different things that can mean.

On this day, we honor the action of mothering. Of protecting. Of giving care. We honor the work, and vulnerability and sacrifice it is to care deeply for another person.

Wishing joy to every person who mothers - in all the different ways. Happy Mothering Day to you.

Writing a piece about postpartum, and it got me thinking of my own. This is me, almost two decades ago. I was just days before my 26th birthday, two babies under two years old in my arms. I feel joy when I remember this sweet moment.

And yet, my heart aches a bit for this young mama. I think of all she didn't know. The heavy weight of the things she expected of herself. Of all the ways she felt not quite good enough.

There are so many things I wish I could tell my tender, hopeful younger self. So many things . But mostly this - it's okay not to be okay sometimes. Be gentle with your body, your heart, your spirit - healing them all takes time. Take all the time you need. 💞

"I want to have a 'natural' birth, but I'm just going to get there and just see how it goes."

If I had a nickel for every birthing person I have heard say that, then well ... you know. 😬😉

You would never run a marathon or scale a mountain without intentional training, right? Birth -- especially birth without pharmacological pain relief -- is no different. Birth is a big event. Planning and preparation are key.

Yes, there are elements in birth that you can't control or anticipate (again, not unlike a marathon!), but you CAN do a lot to help tip the scales in your favor!

And, while ALL BIRTHS ARE NATURAL BIRTHS, whether they take place in a birthing pool, or in an operating suite (should I say that again for the people in the back?!?) planning an un-medicated birth is typically only achieved when the birthing family has prepared -- mentally, physically and emotionally.
