Brothers 🤍 both born at MBC, we love witnessing these sacred times in our families lives.

Fun fact: this baby was born en caul!

Baby is born in their amniotic sac that has not ruptured yet! It’s rare due to amniotic sacs being ruptured (water breaking) prior to the birth of the baby. 💧

Was your baby en caul? Or have you had more than one baby with us?

The umbilical cord 🌀

A cord that connects the baby to the placenta through the baby's belly button. Essentially, the baby's lifeline as it delivers oxygen and nutrients to the baby as well as removes waste. The cord itself is made up of two arteries and one vein that is protected by a gel like consistency called Wharton's Jelly.

Once baby and the placenta have been delivered, the umbilical cord will be clamped to prevent blood flow and cut from the placenta. It is also an option to delay cord clamping and cutting to optimize placental blood flow to the baby.

After the cord is cut, there will be what is called an umbilical cord stump located on baby's belly button that will dry up and fall off about 1-2 weeks following birth.

We run regular drills at both of our Minnesota Birth Center locations to practice various scenarios that might arise during birth and postpartum. In this picture some of our nurses and midwives are practicing a wheelchair transfer at our Minneapolis location.

We love this photo captured by Mariah Ty photography! Our MBC providers can care for you and baby while you are resting in bed with your family. Our midwives do a head to toe assessment of your baby to make sure they are stable and healthy to head home with you. This is what your birth at MBC can look like.

Vulnerability is at the very root of our practice. People’s lives are actively changing as they walk in and out of our doors. From your annual appointments, to preconception counseling, that first dating ultrasound, and then the walk out to the parking lot—buckling your newborn into their carseat for the first time.

We are your team. We are with you all the way.

Its Friday! You know what that means...

Meet Anna ✨

1) What is your role? Birth Assistant

2) What is something fun or interesting about you? I trace back my passion for obstetrics to a Xena: Warrior Princess episode where a human woman has a c section to deliver a centaur baby! I was probably 8 or 9 when I watched it.

3) Birth staff: What is your favorite tool for labor/birth support? The tub or any hydrotherapy. The relief on people's faces when they get in the water is so lovely to watch.
