Yoga Sanctuary

Yoga Sanctuary Yoga Sanctuary is a nonprofit studio seeking to increase access to holistic yoga for all who seek it

Yoga Sanctuary is a nonprofit, holistic studio, offering a place of respite and integration for your body, mind, and spirit. We seek to teach safe, fun relational yoga every day, to EVERY BODY, offering classes, workshops, and 230hr Yoga Teacher Training at sustainable prices fostering abundant access to holistic yoga. We recognize the disparity and inequity inherent in our country’s origin and intentionally offer reduced rates and scholarships to BIPOC folks who have been harmed by systemic racism. If you are experiencing financial hardship and want to join us for yoga, please connect with Shelley@YogaSanctuaryMpls.com - we want to share yoga, share life and share peace with you. The practice of yoga tells us that everything we need for peace and wholeness is already inside us but living and practicing yoga is best done in the context of a supportive community. Together, we will work to ignite the transformative and healing power of being fully present in our bodies and in our lives.

"I'm just carrying a bag of groceries." She said when I asked if I could gather them for a quick picture as they were heading out after class.

Oh but it's so much more than that... ❤️ It wasn't about the photo, it's about what it represents. Doing what we can when and where we can.

It's choosing action over apathy.

Enacting community care, even if seen as small, rather than saying 'I can't make a difference' or 'someone else will help'.

In these times when the needs are enormous, it's so important to continue to do the best we can with the resources that are available to us- using our time, money, resources, transportation, creativity, voice, and presence.

After this morning's class, community happened-

Stories were shared about how we're showing up and balancing that with caring for ourselves and family, about those in our lives that are hurting and afraid, and about how we can continue to come together.

There were hugs and laughs... Some levity in a dark time. And there was working together to get these donations to where they were needed.

We are still collecting donations of food in the lobby for Sabathani. Please feel free to bring food along to class or visit their website to donate directly. Thank you for being a part of this work, on the mat and off.

"Grateful for spaces, places, and people like these."

Sankalpa is more than just a New Year’s resolution. It is a vow to live in accordance with our highest truth, our spirit. Through the sankalpa practice, we embed this vow into the deeper realms of our unconscious - which truly governs us. In Sanskrit texts Sankalpa is the most valuable ingredient that transforms an ordinary affirmation into an experiential truth.

This workshop is intended to bring compassion to what has been, honor what is, and create clarity as we move forward in the light of the new year.

We rarely ask ourselves what it is that we truly desire, which can lead to an un-inspired life. The intention of this workshop is to ask, and receive an answer to this very question. Shelley will invite you to explore your inner-desires and offer contemplative guidance through movement, stillness, meditation and self-reflective practices to help guide you to toward your own personal sankalpa.

In the words of Indu Arora , "Rise beyond procrastination, peel off layers of inertia, and show up for yourself." 💛🙏

To be honest, it feels strange to be promoting workshops and classes while there is so much harm and trauma in our communities right now...

Then I think about how grounding, nervous-system-oriented, holistic, community-based offerings are so important in times like these.

We are not here for money, there are plenty of other ways to make a living. We are here for well-being and liberation that can be clarified and fortified through these powerful practices. These practices that are rooted in ancient wisdom, trauma-informed research, and community care.

As you do your work- at home with family, in your neighborhoods, and in your communities, we are here.

As a non-profit studio, we continue to be here, offering holistic yoga classes, special workshops and events, and regular free classes; we price our classes below market-rate, offer with sliding scales, and subsidies as needed. Please reach out if cost is a barrier.

If you are sheltering in place, or are tuning in from home, all of our weekly classes are also hosted online via livestream.

This Sunday, and the third Sunday of every month, Nei Huynh leads a donation based class to support a local cause. This quarter, 100% of your donations support a local organization supporting immigrant neighbors.

We are with you, in breath and action.

3 Part Breath or Dirga Breath brings attention to filling the lungs entirely by drawing awareness to first the belly, then the ribs, and then the chest.

It's a quick and sure way to have an impact on your energetic system and on on your nervous system.

We invite you to pause and breathe and notice how you feel after.

When words fall short, when anger and grief are brimming, when nervous systems and bodies are buzzing from outrage and fatigue... as we sift through this heaviness in our beloved city, we invite you to join us for a powerful pause.

There is power in our bodies collectively coming together - in protest, in collective care, and in rest.

When we pause, we don't retreat, we recalibrate, so we can move not from urgency and disregulation but from steadiness and clarity, alignment in our values and purpose.

In this adult offering led by Shelley Pagitt, we will create a container for our whole selves, allowing space for difficult emotions. We will move our bodies and breath intending to not suppress the truth that our bodies are experiencing, but to gain steadiness so we are able to BE WITH whatever arises.

There is much work to be done. Much to hold as we fight for justice and serve our community. When we come together in troubling times to build our inner resource, we are more able to show-up for others in the midst of collective pain.

Chelsea Schmitz-Gillam will lead our youth yoga in their own space down the hall. For the safety our kids and teachers, MPS has canceled classes on Friday, January 9. Creating a safe space for Middle and High School youth to gather is so very important. They are far too often caught in the middle of violence, victims with no voice.

Chelsea will skillfully hold all youth with loving care as she guides a grounding meditation, sharing circle, restorative yoga and a short yoga nidra to bring a few moments of rest to unsettled nervous systems.

Kick off the New Year with Embodied Breathwork THIS FRIDAY, a practice that nurtures your body, mind, and spirit as you set intentions for the year ahead.

🌬️By engaging in faster rhythmic breathing, we’ll help shift your brain from its usual patterns of thinking and worrying to a state of presence and connection. This practice can reset your nervous system, release stuck emotions, and guide you toward your inner wisdom—perfect for starting fresh.

✨During this guided practice, you will be invited to explore gentle movement, intentionally use the breath as a tool to go inward, and embrace the deep stillness that breathwork brings.

Registration and details can be found at YogaSanctuaryMpls.com/workshops-class-series

While bodies are being threatened, taken, and harmed here in our beloved communities, while ICE is terrorizing families, friends, and neighbors, how are you residing in your body right here and now? In light of the harm being done to other bodies, how do you land in your own body, to show up for and take care of one another?

There is so much trauma and burnout happening right now... Please remember to take care of your body, see your presence in it as power, so we can continue to show up.

If you are looking for a place to return to your body, to find a moment of respite, to move, breathe, grieve, and connect, know that we are here. If ever a cost is an issue, please reach out.

And please share that our monthly free Yoga Para La Communidad is offered not just in-studio, but over Zoom as well, so you can practice where you are most comfortable.

Breathing with you with deep regard.
