I’ve been studying this for over 15 years—trauma is the only gateway drug. What is trauma? When your nervous system gets “stuck-in-activation” either in a fight/flight (hyperarousal) or a freeze (hypoarousal) threat/distress/survival response. Addiction results from using chemicals to soothe the ongoing distress response. Instead of “trauma” think of overwhelming, inescapable, chronic (ongoing) distress—when we’re “there” long enough out nervous system acclimates or become familiar or used to it and this becomes the new “typical” state and has very significant and detrimental health consequences. This is my area of clinical expertise in practice, consultation, instruction, and clinical supervision after working with complex trauma for over 35 years.
