Heading into my doula-versary next month and celebrating S E V E N years of doula work 👏👏👏 I LOVE this work and will forever carry this passion as a doula in how I show up for, love on, and serve my friends, family and community members. This work has challenged me, stretched me and shaped me into a kinder, more compassionate human; and I’m grateful for every single person and family I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I carry a piece of each of you in my heart.

I’ve been keeping a secret and working on something that I’ve always wanted to pursue.
The timing, the motivation, the opportunity wasn’t quite right up until now. But here we are! I’m going back to school (At the ripe old age of 37) for a degree in abdominal/OB Sonography.
It’s a 4 year commitment and my focus will be on balancing full time schoolwork in a super competitive program, with kids and home-life.

YES- I am still taking clients, but with SUPER limited availability during the school year; and then opening my books to fill the calendar for winter and summer breaks.
So plan accordingly 😉 🤰

Even after graduation, I plan to sprinkle in doula work as I LOVE the birth space and feel called there. It’s just time for me to switch gears and work towards something more sustainable. Being on-call all the time is exhausting 😅

My heart still burns for doula work, reproductive rights, healthcare & birthing folks! I’m looking forward to continuing my education while still showing up for women and birthing people. I love y’all so much! 🤗
I plan to keep this account active and will share bits and peices on my journey along the way.

Here’s to normalizing normal bodies in artwork for the world to see.
Here’s to the lumps, curves, dimples, and stretch marks.
Here’s to honoring myself as the thick baddie that carried and birthed two babies.
Here’s to the fat and pregnant folks who feel mistreated and shamed by fat bias and prejudice in maternal healthcare, I see you. 🫶
Here’s to being healthy and low risk despite the weight.
Here’s to autonomy, reproductive rights, and respect for the choices we make.

Everyone meet, Clare
My own doula, close friend, and incredible L&D nurse. I’m grateful for her friendship and presence in my life. 🙌🏻 She graciously tagged along to support my repeat client Danielle during her labor, birth, and postpartum.
Last night we gathered around Danielle’s family, snuggled baby Jones, and debriefed an epic birth tale. We processed, joked, laughed, validated, and uplifted each other.
Literal dream team right here! I’m selfishly bummed this is Danielle’s last baby, but I’m grateful to have grown as friends and will cherish this connection for years to come ❤️

I believe it’s essential for a doula to have close birthworker friends (and Clare is an integral part of that community for me) who will support you, process s**t with you, and give wisdom, nuance and perspective to complicated situations. You can’t put a price on that kind of community!

Feeling extra grateful today 🥰

In the words of MILCK, “I can’t keep quiet. A one woman riot.”
TBH I am filled with rage as I watch our country dismantle and become vulnerable. I as I watch the bridges to our allies burn. As I watch marginalized people groups suffer. As I watch human rights be obliterated. As I watch personal data and information get pillaged. As I watch our benevolence become stained with greed. As I watch inflation rise and costs soar.
With eyes wide open I watch as they work to oppress the working class. Removing the stewards of our national land, purging watchdogs and overstepping checks and balances. They submit bills seeking the death penalty for the women who practice autonomy. Denying healthcare to bleeding and dying women for fear of litigation.
Professionals no longer safe from retaliation and abusive workplaces.
Removing protections for women, minorities, and the disabled.
Free press being barred access bc they refuse to bend the knee.

What’s happening now is overwhelming but we can’t numb out. We need to stay vigilant. We need to stay angry. We need to recognize our power and actively resist.
The worst thing we can do right now is see what’s happening and choose to stay silent, to do nothing.
We cannot stay silent.
Together we will overcome.
Together we will take back what’s ours.
STAY HUMAN. STAY YOU. LET YOUR FIRE BURN. LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD. 🔥

It has taken me years. YEARS. To come to terms with this.
As a former “pro-life” advocate and conservative voting Christian who thought I understood this topic, it has taken me years to unpack this concept and face some ugly, uncomfortable feelings in order to grow in my understanding of Abortion care.

I had to ask myself hard questions.
I needed to confront my bias and look beyond my indoctrination to find empathy and compassion.
I needed to listen to people’s stories and lived experiences.
I needed to try and understand the nuance and gray world in which abortion care exists.

My hope is that you can read this post and challenge yourself to sit with hard concepts.
I hope you can share this post to spread awareness and education.

If this post makes you feel defensive, angry, or confused, I’ll ask you to lean into that.
Then I need you to ask yourself if there’s something here for you to learn?

You still have the right to form your own opinion and respectfully disagree on a personal level; but I urge you to understand how your belief system and bias impacts the world around you. -especially if you’re a one issue voter and abortion is the only reason you chose Trump in this election. (Bc that was me in 2016) 😔

Lainey says, “Yes! We did it!”
Postpartum visits with my repeat client and friend are always amazing because Mallory knows how to do postpartum the right way.
She prioritizes rest, nourishment, and bonding time with baby. Whenever I check in on this family they are thriving! 👏👏👏
Postpartum is NOT easy and can be a real struggle for most families if you don’t have a solid care plan and support system going into it.
This is why I dedicate a lot of the first prenatal visit with clients talking about the pp plan and giving them a realistic look into life following birth.

You deserve good things. You deserve quality care. You deserve partner and community support, nourishing (& tasty) meals; and time off to rest, bond, and heal.
You are worthy of it.

I recently celebrated my doula-versary —6 years! 😱 it was in September but this season has been crazy busy.

Here’s a little update on life:
I moved! Still local to the twin cities but 10 mins further south. I have space for my own office now, and it feels exciting to have dedicated space for administrative doula work and continuing education.

I just sent out emails to this year’s client list asking for updated reviews for my public social media spaces. I cannot tell you how grateful these reviews make me feel. It’s affirming, but also allows new families to find my page and supports my small business. If you’ve worked with me and haven’t done so yet, I’d love it if you’d take a few mins to write a review and post it to fb, doula match, and/or google.

This year I’m continuing education and participating in the cohort. 🙌🏻 It’s a deep dive into birth physiology, prenatal body prep, and learning another layer of support for my birthing peeps. 🤗

It’s - a- me, Brittany!
I recently celebrated 6 years of full time doula work. 😱
I think about the many, many families I’ve supported over the years. The good, bad, happy and sad times I’ve endured. The unpredictability of this work. Being on call, overlapping births and prenatal visits. Missing out on anniversaries and birthdays in my own family.
-And I would do it all over again.
Doula work is a calling. I am a better human today than I was 6 years ago.
I’m constantly learning, forever in awe of the human body and the birth process. Truly grateful each time I’m invited into someone’s birth space.
I love this work. 🙂
Here’s to 🥂 another solid year supporting women, parents, families and birthing folks!

So many people fall in love with the “natural birth” aesthetic but don’t actually understand what that requires of them. Worse, they don’t do the work to prepare for such an undertaking.
If you’re wanting to birth unmedicated here are some things I’d urge you to consider-

1. If you don’t have realistic expectations and alternative plans in place you are setting yourself up for trauma. Hire a licensed homebirth midwife, buy the twinkly lights, pick out the perfect playlist, but take a solid childbirth education class that teaches you how to navigate the hospital system (shout out to The Reclaimed Village) There’s always a chance plans need to change and you should feel ready to shift and enter that landscape knowing your rights and options.

2. Prepare your mind and establish a belief system about birth. Take a hypnobirthing course (shout out to Flutterby Birth Services ) and do the daily work to grow that skill.

3. Hire a doula! We can’t take your pain away or guarantee an outcome for you, but you will need that continuous support person to fill in the cracks, impart wisdom, consider the needs of your partner, and an advocate working to represent your wishes/interests. -Bonus points if they’re skilled in baby positioning and body balancing techniques. 😉

4. Listen to a lot of birth stories (I enjoyed podcast) and start to recognize patterns (both good and bad) find inspiration, and learn tips that could be applicable to you. *Be sure to protect your headspace and avoid content that could be triggering.

5. Surrender to the fu***ng process! When your birthing time comes, raise that white flag high and surrender everything. Lay it all down. Ride those waves and trust that you’ve done the work to prepare for this moment. And when you think you’ve given everything, birth will ask for just a little bit more… yield. I promise your baby is on the other side of that intensity.

Even with all the education, practice, preparation, and knowledge, unmedicated birth will still be the hardest thing you’ll ever do; but if it’s something you really want, hopefully you can do the damn thing and feel proud of the choices you made along the way!

We'll be bringing in guest speaker Traci Doula, Maternal Instincts Doula to facilitate a weekend full of conversations and activities to help doulas learn how they feel about advocacy, and gain skills to help uphold their client's agency and autonomy.
