🧠 Pediatric Poisoning Trends: Ni****ne Pouches Emerging as a Significant Risk
Thank you to WJXT News4JAX for interviewing the Director of the Florida Poison Information Center, Dr. Dawn Sollee, on-air this morning to highlight a critical new study published in Pediatrics regarding the growing hazard of ni****ne pouch ingestion among children.
📈 According to the study, incidents involving ni****ne pouches have surged more than 760%, and these cases are more likely to result in serious medical outcomes or hospitalizations compared to other ni****ne formulations (gum, lozenges, liquids, powders). Poison control centers did not begin tracking ni****ne pouch ingestion until 2020—yet the escalation in cases has been sharp.
🧒 Why is this happening?
⚠️These small, colorful pouches often look like candy and are easily accessible to crawling infants and curious toddlers.
⚠️They are often flavored and marketed in packaging that appeals to youth.
⚠️Ni****ne is a neurotoxin, and ingestion—even of one pouch—can cause nausea, vomiting, tremors, seizures, or worse.
💡 Prevention & Response Tips:
✔️Store ni****ne products securely and out of reach.
✔️Model safe behavior around children.
✔️Educate youth on the risks associated with ni****ne.
✔️Save and share the Poison Help line: 1-800-222-1222 — expert help is available 24/7.
🏥 If a child has accessed a ni****ne pouch, do not induce vomiting. Immediately call Poison Control to determine next steps. Prompt guidance can make all the difference.
📲 As ni****ne pouch use grows—especially among teens—parents, educators, and health professionals must stay informed and vigilant.
