Are you curious about what a skills lab looks like? Look no further. Pictured here are learners from our recent lab in Bozeman, MT, practicing the head to toe exam and forensic photography with Forensic Nurse Training Specialist Abbie; assessing her eyes, scalp, and arms for injuries. Other hands-on practice sessions include evidence collection, speculum exams, and medical history taking.

While facilitators act as patients for some skills, standardized patients or "live models" are also used portray patient scenarios, and learners have the opportunity to practice two full medical forensic exam from start to finish with them.

This training is for new SANEs looking to build confidence and competence in hands-on skills or practicing SANEs as professional development.

Did you know? More than 50% of campus s*xual assaults take place during the first semester before Thanksgiving break. This is what some experts refer to as "The Red Zone".

The Red Zone is a critical period from the start of the fall semester through Thanksgiving break when over 50% of college s*xual assaults occur, particularly affecting new college students. This heightened risk is due to unfamiliarity with the campus, social pressures, and the excitement of newfound independence.

Before we share some ideas on how to navigate your new freedom safely, it's important you know that s*xual assault is NEVER your fault, and the responsibility for preventing it lies solely with those who perpetrate it.

Sexual safety tips (a non-exhaustive list):
-Take time to thoughtfully consider your desires and boundaries, and to communicate your boundaries and desires clearly with partners.
- Ask and listen to your partner's boundaries, too!
- Alcohol and other substances muddy the waters of consent. If someone is incapacitated, they cannot consent to s*x.
- Trust your instincts; if something feels off, prioritize your safety.
- Educate yourself on campus resources and support systems available to you.
- Build a network of supportive friends and peers to look out for each other.

We just restocked our safer s*x supplies and added some exciting new things! Do you recognize all the items in this photo?

Clockwise from the upper right we have a dental dam, non-latex condom, latex condom, and a receptive condom, more commonly known as a female condom (we prefer the gender-neutral language of "receptive").

We're most excited to add the receptive condom to our resource toolkit. The primary benefit of these condoms is that they are controlled and inserted by the receptive partner, which can increase safety.

These supplies are available at no cost to our patients, no questions asked.

Our team grieves with our Minneapolis community in the wake of the mass shooting at the Annunciation Catholic Church yesterday.

As professionals who respond to intimate partner violence, s*xual violence, and trafficking, we also witness the impact of gun violence in our work every day. Fi****ms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in America, and they increase the risk of domestic violence fatalities by 500% (Campbell, 2003).

Gun violence is a preventable source of harm, and we are committed to advocating for a future without it.

While evidence collection is an important aspect of a medical forensic exam, it is not the primary focus. The top priority is addressing the victim/survivor's medical needs. The medical-forensic exam as a whole offers holistic, trauma-informed support to victim/survivors, and is designed to start their healing journey. A medical forensic exam can also take place without evidence collection. Each medical forensic exam looks different and is personalized to the victim/survivor.

We had an excellent time at the International Conference on Forensic Nursing Science & Practice, where we had the honor of sharing our presentation, "Looking Beyond Bias: Comprehensive Screening and Assessment for Trafficking and Exploitation" and poster, "Addressing Bias in Forensic Nursing Practice".

Minnesota was strongly represented in the other presentations, with our forensic nursing friends at Allina sharing, "Solidarity in Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners" about their unionization efforts, and our colleagues at RE Lab presenting, "Wound Identification and Photography for Patients of Diverse Skin Tones".

We even found our recent publication about our trafficking skills lab cited in another presentation!

We came away from the conference armed with inspiration and energy to push forensic nursing practice forward, and are feeling humbled to be part of such an incredible community.

That, "I should frame this" feeling when your original article gets published in a peer reviewed journal.

"Centering Survivor Experiences in Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation Simulation Training to Improve Patient Care" is now available in the Journal of Forensic Nursing.

The article discusses how we adapted our s*xual assault skills lab to focus on patients experiencing or at risk for human trafficking or s*xual exploitation. We used the slogan, "nothing about us without us" as a guiding philosophy partnered with the amazing , a local youth and adult led advocacy agency, to ensure we didn't perpetuate harmful stereotypes or saviorism with our curriculum, and that survivor voices were front and center.

We are so proud of our nurse manager, Breanna, who received a Daisy Award earlier this year. If you're unfamiliar, "the DAISY Award is a recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers".

The person who nominated Breanna wrote,

"Breanna is a gift to Hennepin Healthcare and to all patients that receive care from Hennepin Assault Response Team staff. I have had the honor to learn from Breanna since 2021. Breanna always prioritizes patient care and a trauma-informed approach to this care. To say that she is detailed and thorough is an understatement. Breanna provides in-depth forensic nursing education to not only team members in the Hennepin program, not only to colleagues across the state of Minnesota, but to forensic nurses across the nation."

We could not agree more. Congratulations, Breanna! Thank you for your amazing work.

Many rural Minnesota communities lack access to specialized medical forensic care, forcing victim/survivors to travel hundreds of miles for services.

We're developing the Hennepin Assault Response Team TeleSANE Access Project to address this gap through telehealth technology that connects rural healthcare providers with expert SANEs in real-time.

We are currently seeking funding for this initiative, and are interested in discussing potential collaborative cost sharing agreements with potential partners. Learn more by contacting Program Supervisor, Stephanie Ellis at Stephanie.Ellis@hcmed.org
