We invite you to take part in the Minnesota Stroke Association's annual Strides for Stroke event! Here, the stroke community honors stroke survivors, walks in solidarity with one another, raises stroke awareness and helps fund programs that benefit Minnesotans who live with the effects of stroke. Strides for Stroke demonstrates that stroke survivors are people with possibilities. Current PhD student, Jesse Kowalski, has received a travel award from the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS) and Neuromodec.com to attend the joint meeting of 2018 Neuromodulation Conference & NANS Summer Series. The conference is taking place August 23-26, 2018, in New York City. Jesse will be presenting a poster titled "Recruitment Challenges in Infant Stroke and Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation Research: Demographics and Factors."

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is highlighting Dr. Bernadette Gillick's NIH K01 research project Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Constraint-Induced Therapy in Cerebral Palsy. Links to the NIH news site and the publication are below.

The Gillick Lab Team recently attended the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine Annual Meeting and presented 1) Safety and feasibility of a synergistic non-invasive brain stimulation and constraint-induced movement in children with unilateral cerebral palsy, and 2) Combined transcranial direct current stimulation and constraint-induced movement therapy intervention in children with unilateral cerebral palsy: Behavioral and neurophysiological findings from a randomized clinical trial. Perinatal stroke affects up to 1 in every 2,300 births, often with resultant movement impairment. Through investigation of how the infant brain recovers after stroke, we are positioned to pioneer development of interventions involving non-invasive brain stimulation and rehabilitation to minimize disability. We are recruiting infants for our Infant Stroke and Brain Bleed Study. Participants are within their first year of life and have had a stroke or bleeding in the brain confirmed by a doctor. Dr. Bernadette Gillick has been named a Representative on the Global Professional Education Committee for the International Alliance of Academies of Childhood Disability. This Alliance represents the American/Canadian, Australasian and European Academies of Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Medicine and Childhood Disability. Her role will involve promoting a global standard of multi-disciplinary education and dissemination surrounding interventions for children with disabilities and their families.
