Visiting the Georgia Mountains this week and had a private tour today with Bob, the owner and longtime bee expert, of Blue Ridge Honey Co. it was fascinating to learn more about the bees and taste all the delicious varieties. 🐝

Happy summer solstice☀️

The first honeydew from the garden today. Super easy to grow.

Honeydew melon offers numerous health benefits due to its high content of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including promoting hydration, aiding in digestion, boosting the immune system, and supporting skin health.

It’s also rich in vitamin C, which helps protect cells from damage and supports overall health.

The pineapple’s association with hospitality began in the Caribbean, where it was offered as a welcoming gift to European explorers.

As the pineapple made its way to Europe, it became a symbol of luxury and status due to its high cost and exotic appeal.

In the American colonies, pineapples became a symbol of welcome, friendship, and generosity, especially in the South.

The pineapple motif was also incorporated into architecture, furniture, and decorative arts as a sign of welcome and hospitality.

We chose the symbol as our logo as a welcome to everyone who visits our garden.

So don’t throw away the top of your pineapple( grab a pot, add soil and plant one. 🍍

The talented artist is here creating the long awaited mural for the garden. Jeff has worked for many years as an imagineer for Disney in Orlando, California, and Shanghai. He’s currently a scenic art director for the Animal Kingdom and the garden is so lucky to have him here. 🍍🌴☀️

A native plant growing in the Mediterranean and western Asia, hyssop is grown for its beautiful purplish-blue flowers as well as its medicinal properties.

Hyssopus officinalis is considered “true” hyssop and is the plant used for culinary and medicinal purposes for centuries. It has been a remedy for bronchitis, coughs, fevers, anxiety, tension, and ulcers.

I threw a bag of edible wildflower seeds into my garden bed and was surprised by what came up.

This is Chicory, winding itself through my wind chimes.

Many varieties are cultivated for salad leaves, chicons (blanched buds), or roots (var. sativum), which are baked, ground, and used as a coffee substitute and food additive.

In the 21st century, inulin, an extract from chicory root, has been used in food manufacturing as a sweetener and source of dietary fiber. Chicory is also grown as a forage crop for livestock.

The University of Florida (UF) has developed several peach hybrids specifically for Florida’s climate, most notably Flordaprince. This peach hybrid has low chill hours requirement, meaning it can thrive in regions with mild winters.

Zinnias belong to the Asteraceae family (daisy family) and are known for their vibrant colors, ease of growth, and low maintenance requirements. They are also attractive to pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds.

To eat a sapodilla, wash the fruit and then either peel it or cut it in half. Scoop out the flesh with a spoon, being careful to avoid the seeds, which are not recommended for consumption. The skin is edible, but many people prefer to peel it off.

It was a pleasure to meet Lindsay and Julie yesterday and give them a tour of the garden. These women are both very active here in the community and we had amazing conversations while drinking Pineapple Peace Garden’s Tulsi Chai Tea.
