What stage are you at?

Life is a bitch. Then you die. So while staring at my navel the other day, I decided that that bitch happens in four stages. Here they are.

I was inspired by my church service yesterday. I practice therapy from the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy lens. As such, I spend much of my day encouraging my clients to live to their value system in order to spend less time on their negative mental health symptoms and more time on what gives them meaning. This sermon was a great reminder of how each one of us should consider what our "story" will be and live to that story. Take a watch. https://www.messiahchurch.org/messages/the-legacy-question/

What a year it's been for Minnesota. With all these uncertainties in our lives it can feel like we are loosing ground. However, if we are able to reflect back on the journey that got us here we will find growth, even through the most uncertain times. Today, I invite you to reflect where you were a year ago. The pandemic had just hit and times were very uncertain last April. What insight have you gained in the last year about yourself? What area's of growth are still present? What advice would you give the version of yourself from April 2020? With that I leave you with this great YouTube creation...

What would happen if I tried to explain what's happening now to the January 2020 version of myself?

I was doing research today while watching the snow fall and I found this little nugget below.
"When humans are presented with evidence consistent with their
beliefs, brain regions get activated that function in learning and memory formation. Inconsistent evidence, however, activates brain regions that are associated with error detection and conflict." - (Beck, & Forstmeier).
With this thought the authors continue on to discuss how doubts often arise when we are confronted with ideas that go against our belief systems. Through this doubt process, humans will use logic and reasoning to match this new information into the old and develop a new worldview. Therefore, worldviews will improve generation after generation as we come across less and less unexpected discoveries. However, this process is also uncomfortable as some do not like change. It is my hope that this is a glimpse into our human nature and how we are designed to incorporate new information into old and not to discard information that doesn't fit our belief systems.

In my nightly devotions tonight I came across a fitting verse. “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (Ephesians 4:2).

With our nation as divided as it is right now I feel this is a fitting verse to dwell on. It speaks to how we should all remember that we have all sinned and fallen short of perfection in this life. However, rather than dwell on each other’s imperfections it’s time to see how we are similar. This week when you consider those in your life that are different from you take time to consider your similarities. Pray for those individuals and make space for them in your life. You never know what insight you might gain about yourself in the process.

In reflecting on words spoken by Dave Ramsey this morning I was inspired when this song came on my radio to put a posting up.

Just remember that during these troubled times God is in control. Dave states that if you are experiencing a heightened sense of anxiety during this time, then its time to turn off the news media and open up your Bible. Put your faith in God that he will bring our nation through this crisis.
