🧐Did you know eyeglasses started as simple reading stones?

👓 Eyeglasses we know today actually began as simple reading stones—a stepping stone (literally!) in the history of vision correction.

Before eyeglasses were invented, people in the 10th–12th centuries used something called reading stones. These were large, polished hemispheres of glass or crystal placed directly on top of a page to magnify the letters. They worked like a magnifying glass, making it easier to read small script in books or manuscripts.
• Who used them? Mostly monks, scholars, and scribes who spent long hours copying texts.
• Limitation: Reading stones had to be placed directly on the page and only magnified a small portion of text at a time.
