To the Residents of Floyd County,
This letter is to inform you that the Floyd County Health Department has identified one new case of pertussis (whooping cough) in our community. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in 2025 to four. Our staff is actively investigating this case, providing guidance to close contacts, and monitoring the situation closely to reduce the risk of further spread. If you have question about this, please call Pam with the Floyd County Health Department at (606) 886-2788.

About Pertussis
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can affect individuals of all ages. While symptoms may begin mildly, the illness can be especially dangerous for infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Common Symptoms Include:
• Runny nose
• Low-grade fever
• Mild cough or sneezing
• Progression to severe coughing fits
• “Whooping” sound after coughing
• Vomiting following coughing episodes
• Extreme fatigue

Incubation Period
Symptoms typically appear 7–10 days after exposure, but in some cases may take as long as 21 days to develop.

Prevention and Protection
The most effective way to prevent pertussis is through vaccination (DTaP/Tdap). I strongly encourage residents to check their immunization status and ensure that children, adolescents, and adults are up to date. Additional preventive measures include practicing good hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when ill. Individuals with a persistent cough should seek medical evaluation, especially if they have been around infants or high-risk individuals.

The Floyd County Health Department remains committed to protecting the health of our community. If you believe you have been exposed to pertussis or are experiencing symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider or reach out to our department for further guidance.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping keep Floyd County healthy and safe.

Sincerely,

Martha Ellis
Director
Floyd County Health Department

In just one month, our OTC Pharmacy Assistance Program has already served 232 patients across Floyd, Lawrence, and Greenup Counties, providing more than 190 free items like wound care supplies, mobility aids, and personal care products to neighbors who needed them most.

This work is only possible because of the generosity of the Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund, whose support has helped light the way for patients facing serious health challenges and financial hardship.

Due to the high level of need, our initial funding for Floyd County has now been fully used, even as demand continues to grow. We are actively seeking additional sponsors and community partners to ensure Floyd County residents can keep accessing these critical over‑the‑counter medical supplies at no cost.

If you, your business, or your organization is interested in sponsoring patients in Floyd County or elsewhere in Kentucky, please reach out to us or send a message here so we can continue this life‑changing work. Tax-deductible contributions can be made here: https://cpesnky.org/support/
