North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI)

North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI) Welcome to the North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (ND EHDI) program page! Our goal is to focus on all aspects of hearing health.

The ND EHDI program has been in operation since 2000. At that time, there was an increased emphasis placed on universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS). As programs evolved from UNHS into EHDI, an additional emphasis was placed on follow-up efforts thus requiring support for both birth screening and subsequent follow-up activities. This additional focus to reduce loss to documentation/loss to follow-up (LTD/LTF) has brought about the need to enlist additional program partners including audiologists, child health care providers, and early childhood programs while maintaining a strong birth screening program. Following an infant from birth through diagnosis and into early intervention requires ongoing diligence and a system bridging all medical and educational communities.

Sign language is an effective way for toddlers—especially those who are deaf or hard of hearing—to express themselves and connect with others. Whether your child is non-verbal, developing speech, or primarily communicates visually, sign language can help them share their needs, feelings, and ideas from an early age. To explore tools and strategies designed for toddlers and their families, see the EI Clearinghouse resource guides on Sign Language for Babies and Young Children and Deaf and Hard of Hearing Resources:

Celebrating 50 Years of IDEA — and Protecting Its Promise
This year, DEC proudly celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the landmark 1975 law that guaranteed children with disabilities the right to a free appropriate public education and access to inclusive learning environments—rights previously denied to millions.

As we honor this milestone, we celebrate the progress made toward equitable, inclusive opportunities for children with disabilities and their families. Yet we also recognize that IDEA’s protections—and the federal systems that uphold them, including the U.S. Department of Education—are facing significant threats. Now is not the time to slow our advocacy or risk losing the gains achieved over five decades.

DEC encourages members and partners to use this anniversary year to raise awareness of IDEA’s history, impact, and continued importance. The CEC IDEA 50th Anniversary Toolkit provides accessible resources to help you share IDEA’s story and underscore the urgency of protecting it. https://sbee.link/j6m3nc8hrt

As we commemorate 50 years of progress, DEC reaffirms our commitment to protecting the rights, services, and inclusive opportunities guaranteed by IDEA—and to advocating alongside you for the next 50 years of progress and more.

🚨 Undetected Hearing Loss is a Developmental Emergency! 🚨

Early action is essential. Through collaboration among healthcare providers, early intervention teams, and family support partners, the ND Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (ND EHDI) project helps connect families and professionals with the resources they need to understand the hearing healthcare process and make informed decisions.

Together, we can ensure every child receives timely, life-changing support. 💛

Don’t Delay! Know the Next Steps for Your Baby’s Hearing Health:
👶 1 Month: All babies should be screened by 1 month of age—ideally before leaving the hospital.
👂 3 Months: If a baby does not pass two screenings, a medical and hearing evaluation should be completed before 3 months.
🗣️ 6 Months: If hearing loss is confirmed, early intervention services should begin by 6 months of age.

Early detection = brighter outcomes.
