North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI)

North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI) Welcome to the North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (ND EHDI) program page! Our goal is to focus on all aspects of hearing health.

The ND EHDI program has been in operation since 2000. At that time, there was an increased emphasis placed on universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS). As programs evolved from UNHS into EHDI, an additional emphasis was placed on follow-up efforts thus requiring support for both birth screening and subsequent follow-up activities. This additional focus to reduce loss to documentation/loss to follow-up (LTD/LTF) has brought about the need to enlist additional program partners including audiologists, child health care providers, and early childhood programs while maintaining a strong birth screening program. Following an infant from birth through diagnosis and into early intervention requires ongoing diligence and a system bridging all medical and educational communities.

All newborns should be screened for hearing loss. Make sure your newborn’s hearing is screened before leaving the hospital. If your baby is born at home or not in a birthing center, make a plan with your baby’s pediatrician to have their hearing screened and schedule a follow up consultation with an audiologist if needed.

All newborns should be screened for hearing loss. Learn more about a newborn hearing screening and when they should have one here.

Resources to inform the Parent Journey
What will my child’s future look like?
I’ve never met any adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. Where do I go?
Who will my child’s friends be?
How do I help my child feel strong and confident?
What is it like to grow up deaf or hard of hearing?

These are some of the questions we have encountered from parents of children who are deaf and hard of hearing children early in the journey. You likely have many more questions to ask. Knowing the tremendous value in learning from adults who are deaf and hearing, families can explore these links with a wealth of diverse perspectives through stories, articles, websites and research on this page.
