Global Partners in Care

Global Partners in Care Global Partners in Care supports compassionate care where the need is great and resources few. Compassion has no borders.

Global Partners in Care is an affiliate of Hospice Foundation, a South Bend, IN based nonprofit organization. Global Partner in Care is the re-imagined, re-designed, and re-inspired organization that was formerly known as FHSSA (Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa). FHSSA was initially created in 1999, after U.S. hospice leaders had a powerful experience during a professional seminar tour of hospices in Zimbabwe and South Africa. The tour highlighted the tremendous impact the burgeoning HIV/AIDS pandemic was having on African hospice leaders and their programs. Many areas had no hospices, and the hospices that did exist were being severely challenged by the urgent need to adapt hospice care to the special needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. With minimal access to pain medication and very few hospice programs, healthcare systems and community members alike were overwhelmed. In order to mobilize a response to the sub-Saharan HIV/AIDS pandemic and support Africa’s hospice and palliative care programs’ ability to provide compassionate care, these U.S. leaders formed The Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa (FHSSA) in 1999. In 2004, FHSSA became an affiliate of the U.S.-based National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). In 2014, NHPCO made the decision to build on the proven model of partnership that had been successful through FHSSA and changed the name to “Global Partners in Care.” Still fully committed to existing partnerships in Africa, Global Partners in Care began expanding its reach based on the increasing need for hospice and palliative care services in other regions of the world. In fact, 80% of the global need for palliative care is in low- and middle-income countries. In addition, treatment of pain is inadequate in low- and middle-income countries. These countries, which represent 83% of world’s population, utilized a mere 8% of total morphine consumption worldwide. In 2017, Global Partners in Care became an affiliate of Hospice Foundation, a South Bend, IN based nonprofit organization.

From March 10–14, Global Partners in Care (GPIC) joined leaders across Latin America in São Paulo, Brazil, for the XII Latin American Association for Palliative Care (ALCP) Congress, alongside the XI Academia Nacional de Cuidados Paliativos (ANCP) Congress—our first engagement in the region.

Conversations on misconceptions and equity in care reinforced one clear message: meaningful progress requires strong, intentional collaboration across regions. Many of the challenges and successes we observed resonate globally, highlighting the power of connection.

We’re grateful for the chance to engage, learn, and support the incredible work already underway across Latin America, and we look forward to strengthening these partnerships.

Today is World Social Work Day. The theme for this year is "Co-Building Hope & Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society."

In palliative care, social workers play a vital role in coordinating services and providing care across various communities, cultures, and systems. This year, we highlight that progress requires collaboration and solidarity.

In line with this year's theme, social workers in palliative care support families by amplifying marginalized voices and striving to provide care in fractured communities. Palliative care is about dignity and belonging, which resonates with the core of the social worker role. Today, on International Women’s Day, we honor the vital role women have played in palliative care. Whether it's as trailblazers, leaders, clinicians, advocates, or caregivers around the world.

Across communities, women have shown remarkable compassion and leadership in advancing palliative care, working to ensure that people living with serious illnesses are met with dignity, comfort, and support. From establishing international advocacy organizations to creating grassroots community programs, women have been instrumental in shaping and strengthening palliative care globally. Thank you to all the women who have paved the way for palliative care today.

Today, February 4th, is , where we stand in support of all those affected by cancer. Palliative care plays a vital role in supporting individuals living with cancer and their families by focusing on comfort, dignity, and quality of life at every stage of the journey. Individuals are cared for as whole human beings and not just as cases or conditions. This year's theme, "United by Unique," focuses on the unique stories and experiences of each individual. Today, we support compassionate, patient-centered palliative care that prioritizes what matters most for each person in their fight against cancer.

Today is . The theme of this year is “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” reminding us of the importance of compassionate, high-quality palliative care for people living with HIV.

Currently, the most vulnerable are being put at greater risk and limiting access to the holistic care they deserve. As a community, we need renewed global commitment, human rights-centered policies, and sustained investment in services that include palliative care as a key component of the HIV response. This World AIDS Day, we call for bold action to protect progress and ensure dignity and support for all people living with HIV.
