Beyond the first 30 d after infection, individuals with COVID-19 are at increased risk of incident cardiovascular disease spanning several categories, including cerebrovascular disorders, dysrhythmias, ischemic and non-ischemic heart disease, pericarditis, myocarditis, heart failure and thromboembolic disease. These risks and burdens were evident even among individuals who were not hospitalized during the acute phase of the infection and increased in a graded fashion according to the care setting during the acute phase (non-hospitalized, hospitalized and admitted to intensive care).

"Removing the need to take a daily pill will increase compliance," said Dr. Amesh Adalja.

An injection is also "more discrete" than having a bottle of pill lying around your home, Dr. Adalja said. "That might reduce some of the stigma that people may feel with PrEP," he added.

The injection, which is meant to be given every two months, is an alternative to the current daily pill regimen.

No, you should wait to get vaccinated if you have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 10 days. You can get vaccinated once your isolation period is over, which is 10 days from the start of your symptoms or 10 days after your positive test result if you haven’t had symptoms.

While many infections can be treated by your primary care physician there are times when you might need to see an infectious disease specialist.

When might I need to see one?

- An infection that is hard to diagnose or doesn't respond to typical treatment
- Plans to travel to a foreign country that has a high infection risk
- A chronic infectious disease such as HIV/AIDS, chronic osteomyelitis
- Have an immune deficient condition which puts you at a high risk for recurrent infections

How is an infectious disease specialist trained?

Infectious disease specialists have four years of medical school three years of training in internal medicine and two to three years of specialized training in infectious diseases. They are also required to pass the board exams in both internal medicine and infectious diseases.

What does an infectious disease specialist do?

Infectious disease specialists review detailed medical history, lab reports, imaging studies. They may perform a physical examination and order additional tests like blood cultures, inflammatory markers and imaging studies. They may also prescribe treatments such as medication — usually antibiotics — to help combat your infection. Antibiotics may be given orally like a pill or liquid medicine or via IV directly into the veins. Many infectious disease specialists can administer IV antibiotics in the office.

Infectious disease specialists work in collaboration with your primary care physician to develop a treatment plan that will best help you.

A recent flu outbreak at the University of Michigan serves as a reminder that flu can emerge and spread quickly. It is important to take steps now to protect against flu viruses that will circulate this winter, including vaccination against flu, everyday preventive actions like hand washing, and treatment with an antiviral drugs if prescribed. In addition, flu illnesses and COVID-19 illnesses occurring at the same time may strain the healthcare system, so taking steps to prevent both illnesses is important. Protect against COVID-19 by getting COVID-19 vaccines and wearing a mask in public. Learn more: bit.ly/MMWR7049e1

Nearly 80% of counties in the U.S. have no infectious disease specialists. The shortage of infectious disease specialists puts patients at increased risk.

We take new referrals seriously, try to schedule appointments as soon as we receive the request unlike many other ID practices in the State where usually there are several weeks or months of waitlist.

We do not dismiss recurrent UTI, cellulitis, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue, etc. All initial visits are scheduled with a minimum 60 minutes face to face with the doctor.

We answer your phone calls and return it s soon as possible unlike many other places where you never get a call back in a same day.

Support your local independent physician owned practices where quality care comes first!

Amidst the overall physician shortage in the US, an alarming shortage of infectious disease physicians looms as the nation continues to fight COVID-19. Learn key reasons why the supply of ID specialists is falling behind demand, and what it means for patients.

Most recent COVID-19 booster recommendation.

As the science and the virus evolve, so do our policies and recommendations. Booster doses are common for many vaccines.

The scientists and medical experts who developed the COVID-19 vaccines continue to closely watch for signs of waning immunity, how well the vaccines protect against new mutations of the virus, and how that data differ across age groups and risk factors.

SJC Department of Health supported COVID-19 vaccine clinic hours are: Monday-Friday, 8:30-3:20 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30-11:20 a.m. in the main lobby of the county city building (227 W. Jefferson Blvd, South Bend, IN 46601).
