For me, Chiropractic is a rewarding career. I have a fun job which has resulted in many good friends and loyal patients. Now let's get down to business. With the continued use of cell phones and prolonged time on the computer, poor posture is rampant . Poor posture puts stress on the spine which includes the bones, cartilage, ligaments and of course the nerves. This stress eventually leads to pain and suffering. The suffering is often joint pain, muscle fatigue with pain and headaches. Some people can get radiating pain or numbness down their legs or arms. Below are some good general rules that can help with posture. I find that Chiropractors, Physical Therapists and fitness trainers can all help to improve your posture, especially with exercise.

How's your posture? If you often find yourself slouching or experiencing back pain from sitting for long periods of time, check out these tips!

At age 38, I had a pretty serious lower back injury while windsurfing in the bay area. I had a damaged disc in my lower back and could hardly stand or walk. I got three medical options. Two suggested surgery and one doctor said let's give it time.
I decided to give it more time but needed to get back in shape so I could work. Being somewhat of a water person, I decided to use swimming, some gentle chiropractic, ice, muscle stimulation and of course much rest as means for my rehabilitation . The first day it was difficult to even walk to the pool. I started by slowly walking in the shallow water. I did this for only 5 minutes. It seemed that each day I got a little better. Finally I was swimming laps without pain. I believe it took about 6 to 8 weeks and was able to return to work.

If you sometimes wonder why you put yourself through the pain of tough workout after tough workout, you’re not alone. But in what may seem like a paradoxical relationship, fighting through the pain of a challenging swim could be a smart, drug-free way to reduce or manage other kinds of pain. That....

As we age, we lose flexibility and balance. Bone strength and density often decreases as well. Falls in the elderly can lead to bone fractures and serious health issues. The good news is we can help improve extremity and spinal flexibility with exercise and stretching. Spinal adjustments from a chiropractor can also free up fixated or restricted spinal joints with spinal manipulations or adjustments. It is also easier to balance with a well aligned spine. There are many effective balance improving exercise programs as well.

Chiropractic care has the potential to mitigate many factors that contribute to fall risk in older adults, including:

❌Reduced musculoskeletal strength and flexibility
❌Chronic pain and polypharmacy
❌Diminished proprioception and vestibular function
❌Overall compromised gait health, mobility, balance confidence and self-efficacy

I must admit that as the years go by my personal sleeping is not as good. However, regular exercise, not eating a heavy meal late in the evening and having a quiet dark room can really help. Spending much time on your phone or computer prior to bedtime can also disrupt the sleeping process. I often hear my patient's comment that they sleep much better after being adjusted. So if your suffering from neck and back pain and stiffness you should give chiropractic care a try. More often than not alleviating or eliminating a patient's spinal complaints and improving their alignment results in better sleep.

Poor sleep has been linked to:

❌OBESITY
❌DIABETES
❌HIGH-BLOOD PRESSURE
❌DEPRESSION

Consult your today to address sleep issues and prevent the use of painkillers or sleep aids.

I leaned much about hydration while participating in amature moutain bike racing and riding on hot days. I found people deep in the mountains who were on the ground and couldn't move. I would give them some water and minerals and like magic they would be able to get up and eventually ride out of trouble. Yes heat was a factor on their incapacitation on many occasions but not always. On a hard 30 mile ride I became weak suddenly as if I lost 80% of my riding power. I went home and found out when I went to the bathroom the urine was a dark yellow. That is a classic sign that you are dehydrated. So clear urine is good and dark yellow urine is bad. Improving your water drinking habits will result in more energy and better kidney health.

How Much Water Does Your Body Need Each Day?
We’ve all heard that 8 glasses of water each day is best. But the truth is, how much water you need varies. But there are some basic guidelines:
For men, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends a total of 13 cups (about 3 liters) of fluid each day.
For women, they suggest 9 cups (a little over 2 liters) of fluid each day. Pregnant women should drink about 10 cups of water daily. Those who breastfeed need about 12 cups.

As a teenager I loved to surf and play tennis. I also was on the high school gymnastics team. Unfortunately, I hurt my back crashing during a gymnastics work out. This ended up causing chronic lower pain that stopped me from doing all the sports I loved for quite some time. I found physical therapy and gentle yoga helpful along with resting when my back was inflamed. Yet I still suffered. Finally, one of my football player high school friends referred me to his chiropractor. I liked being adjusted and felt chiropractic helped me return to the sports I loved. Later in life I took up triathlons, mountain bike racing and windsurfing. I still find that being adjusted helps me continue to be active and do the things I love. Maybe this is why I became a chiropractor and have been practicing for 43 years.

I have to be honest. This is an area in which I must improve. I have seen some significant health benefits in patients and friends who take the time and discipline to improve their diets. I have witnessed weight loss, increased energy, less muscle and joint pain and lower blood sugar levels. Some of the patients require less cholesterol and blood sugar medications as prescribed and monitored by their medical physicians. Please consider making a healthy change in your diet. Remember this quote from Benjamin Franklin "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

People with healthy eating patterns live longer and are at lower risk for serious health problems. Healthy eating can also help manage conditions and prevent complications, according to the CDC.
