Yes you can prevent arthritis and it starts with this:

How Massage Therapy Can Help Prevent Arthritis

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent arthritis entirely, research suggests that regular myofascial release style therapy can play a significant role in reducing the risk and managing early symptoms. By improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and promoting joint flexibility, therapy can help maintain overall joint health and delay the onset of arthritis.

We use a specific medically patented technique called Active Release Techniques (ART). This took years of training and practice to learn. A thorough knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics is necessary to perform this technique correctly but in my opinion it's the best way to prevent the muscles and fascia from binding together and creating "Adhesions".

These adhesions will cause problems down the road, and one of the most common problems will be a breakdown in the integrity and balance of the joints in your body, most commonly in the spine.

Improving Circulation and Reducing Inflammation

One of the primary benefits of ART therapy is its ability to improve blood flow. Proper circulation ensures that nutrients and oxygen reach the joints, helping to maintain their health and function. Additionally, ART promotes the drainage of lymphatic fluids, which aids in reducing inflammation, a key factor in the development of arthritis. By keeping inflammation at bay, ART therapy helps prevent the breakdown of cartilage and joint tissues that leads to arthritis.

Enhancing Joint Flexibility and Mobility

Stiffness and lack of movement contribute significantly to joint deterioration over time. Massage therapy helps to loosen tight muscles, improve flexibility, and maintain range of motion in the joints. Techniques such as Active Release Techniques, deep tissue massage, myofascial release, and stretching can help prevent the stiffness that often precedes arthritis.

Reducing Stress and Muscle Tension

Chronic stress and muscle tension can contribute to joint strain and inflammation, increasing the risk of developing arthritis. Massage and other styles of muscle therapy iare well-known for their relaxation benefits, which help lower stress levels and reduce cortisol, a hormone linked to inflammation. By promoting relaxation, massage therapy indirectly protects joint health and reduces arthritis risk.

Supporting Cartilage Health

Cartilage acts as a cushion between bones, preventing friction and joint damage. As people age, cartilage naturally wears down, but ART therapy can help slow this process by encouraging synovial fluid production. This fluid lubricates the joints, keeping them healthy and reducing the risk of degeneration.

Conclusion

While myofascial or massage style therapies alone cannot completely prevent arthritis, they are a valuable tool in maintaining joint health and reducing risk factors. Through improved circulation, reduced inflammation, increased flexibility, stress relief, and support for cartilage health, these therapies can play a proactive role in preventing arthritis.

If we haven't seen you in a while, remember the months roll by quicker than you think. It's important to keep the muscles and joints in your body free from tension and adhesions. A maintenance visit is never a bad idea.

Stop trying to stretch by touching your toes! Here's why:

Low back stiffness is much more complex than one might think. Touching your toes to stretch your hamstrings or lower back might feel good in the moment, but it's not doing much. Read on:

Basic steps for a good newsletter

Why Bending Down to Touch Your Toes May Not Be the Best Stretch

When it comes to flexibility and stretching, one of the most iconic moves people attempt is bending down to touch their toes. It’s often used as a benchmark for flexibility and is included in warm-ups across gyms, schools, and sports fields. However, despite its popularity, this stretch is not always the best option and, in some cases, may even be counterproductive or harmful. Here’s why:

1. It Targets the Wrong Areas

Touching your toes is commonly believed to stretch the hamstrings, but the reality is more complicated. In many cases, the movement primarily stresses the lower back rather than effectively targeting the hamstring muscles. If your hamstrings are tight, your body compensates by rounding your lower back, shifting the stretch away from the intended area.

2. Risk of Lower Back Strain

The rounded-back posture that many people adopt during this stretch can put undue pressure on the lumbar spine. For individuals with pre-existing lower back issues or poor flexibility, this position can exacerbate discomfort or even cause injury. Prolonged or repetitive bending with a rounded back may strain the spinal discs and ligaments.

3. It’s a Static Stretch Done Cold

Toe-touching is often included in warm-up routines, but static stretches like this one are not ideal when your muscles are cold. Research shows that static stretching before physical activity can temporarily reduce muscle strength and power. Instead, dynamic movements that warm up the muscles and increase blood flow are more effective for preparing the body for exercise.

4. It Doesn’t Address Flexibility Imbalances

Flexibility issues are rarely limited to one muscle group. Tight hamstrings, for example, may be linked to tight hip flexors, weak glutes, or other imbalances. Toe-touching does not address these interconnected issues and may provide a false sense of progress.

5. Better Alternatives Exist

If your goal is to stretch your hamstrings or improve overall flexibility, there are safer and more effective options:

Dynamic Hamstring Stretch: Try walking kicks, where you swing one leg straight in front of you as you walk, keeping your torso upright.

Seated Hamstring Stretch: Sit on the floor with one leg extended and the other bent, reaching toward your toes while keeping your back straight.

Active Stretching with Resistance Bands: Use a resistance band around your foot to gently pull your leg upward while lying on your back.

Yoga Poses: Poses like Downward Dog or Pyramid Pose effectively stretch the hamstrings and promote overall mobility while reducing strain on the lower back.

6. Individual Considerations Matter

Stretching should never be one-size-fits-all. Your anatomy, flexibility level, and any existing injuries should all be considered when choosing stretches. A move that works for one person may not be appropriate for another, especially if they have tight hamstrings or lower back sensitivities.

Final Thoughts

While touching your toes might seem like a simple and universal stretch, it’s not always the best choice for everyone. It can place unnecessary strain on your lower back, fail to effectively target the intended muscles, and even hinder athletic performance when done as part of a warm-up. By opting for dynamic stretches and tailored flexibility routines, you can achieve better results without risking injury. Stretch smarter, not harder!

Step 2: Proofreading
Next, make sure your content is accurate. If you’re discussing a particular topic, don’t be afraid to reference your sources. It builds credibility with your audience. Proofreading everything is also critical. Don’t just check for grammar errors, but review the language you use for consistency of tone and voice.

Step 3: Call-to-Action
Finally, include a call-to-action, either a link to your website or social media page, or some additional reading. You’ve got your customers attention, so take advantage of it.

If there is one thing I can get all my patients to do daily, it's this. There is no excuse not to do this. It can be done while watching TV, listening to podcasts, or talking on the phone. It's completely passive (for most people).

It's sitting cross legged on the ground.

Sitting Indian style, or cross-legged. This age-old practice not only encourages flexibility in the hips but also fosters proper spinal alignment. By sitting in this position, you engage your core muscles, which can help reduce strain on your lower back and improve your posture. It allows for an active form of sitting that can relieve tension and discomfort, and can be incorporated into your daily routine, helping to combat the negative effects of prolonged sitting.

Incorporating movements like sitting Indian style into your lifestyle can contribute to longevity as well. By enhancing spinal flexibility and promoting healthy posture, you reduce the risk of developing chronic back pain and other musculoskeletal issues associated with aging. Additionally, this position encourages mindfulness and relaxation, which are essential for mental well-being.

Please remember, this is most important, when you first start sitting cross legged, you may need to use pillows, yoga blocks, or other props to help you comfortably be able to do this. Please use resources like YouTube or google to learn about how you can modify your cross leg position so that you can ease into it and not strain.

Unlock The Miracle of Vitamin D.

Recently, I had the opportunity to help someone who was showing the beginning signs of VITILIGO. Vitiligo is an auto immune disorder that causes the body to attack it's own melanin producing cells. This means that certain areas of the body LOSE PIGMENT and TURN WHITE.

Obviously this disorder can drastically affect the life of the person who has it.

I was determined to help this person and I knew from hours and hours of research that the general medical consesus is that there is no cure, and that there can be temporary improvement using steroids to reduce inflammation etc.

However there was on published study that showed that people (with vitiligo) that took 35,000 IU of Vitamin D per day, showed dramatic improvement in their vitiligo and their skin repigmented.

Also note the following:

Vitamin D levels in vitiligo patients
A meta-analysis of 31 studies found that patients with vitiligo had significantly lower serum vitamin D levels than controls. The study also found that patients who worked indoors or in urban areas had even lower levels than those who worked outdoors or in rural areas.

A study found that combining vitamin D3 ointment with PUVA phototherapy improved moderate vitiligo in more than 48% of patients. Another study found that combining topical vitamin D3 with microneedling was an effective treatment for stable vitiligo.

To make a long story short, I recommended this patient take 35,000 IU of Vit D per day for two months. We combined this with a $300 phototherapy lamp from amazon. The white patches that were rapidly spreading stopped spreading. Then, the patches filled in with color over the next two weeks. As of today the patches are barely visible!

I am now convinced that taking more vitamin D can help with many disorders and improve general health. If you're still reading here are some more fun facts to consider:

Did you know that nearly 42% of the U.S. population is deficient in Vitamin D? This essential vitamin plays a significant role in maintaining bone health, supporting the immune system, and regulating mood. It can even impact your body’s overall alignment and function, which is especially important when addressing musculoskeletal concerns. We encourage you to consider your Vitamin D levels, especially as we approach the winter months when sunlight, our primary source of this nutrient, is harder to come by. If you’re experiencing discomfort or pain, it could be related to nutritional deficiencies, including Vitamin D.

One of the most common concerns for my patients is their posture. This is getting even more urgent with the younger kids growing up with phones, tablets, and computers.

I want to show you the basic mechanics of how poor posture occurs. You can use this information to start to put together a game plan for how you're going to start to improve, and more importantly, stop the progression of poor posture.

Everything (Almost) that you need to know about posture is in the image above. Make sure you look at it until you understand it.

In your body, there are certain muscles that are too tight, and certain muscles that are too weak. The weak muscles are always the ones that get overlooked in a general basic gym work out. As you can see in the image above, the deep neck flexors and lower traps play a major role in posture, yet most people do not focus on these muscles in the gym.

Tight upper traps, pecs, and levator scaps are found in almost everyone these days.

It's not enough to just stretch these tight muscles, as they have most likely been bound and stuck for years. In these cases, it's best to seek someone who specializes in muscle work. An expert will be able to identify the areas that are stuck together, and systematically break these areas up. The fascia that sticks together can eventually unstick and retain the glide that it once had in your youth.

The best approach to improving posture is 3 fold.

1. Start to strengthen those overlooked muscles. Use YouTube as your resource for this.

2. Start to stretch the tight muscles daily.

3. Seek help from experts that can break up fascia, adhesions, and scar tissue.

Why Monthly Visits Are So Important

The one thing that almost everyone gets wrong is that they only come in for therapy when they're in pain.

The real trick to staying pain free and avoiding joint problems like arthritis is with a consistent muscle therapy which is sustained over time. There is nothing else that compares.

So many of my patients should be coming in for monthly maintenance sessions. The cost is minimal and the benefits are numerous.

Certain parts of the body need maintenance...

Not all the joints in the body need monthly maintenance

In terms of hands on therapy like what I do here in my office, there are certain areas that will most definitely continue to get more and more stuck. More and more stiff over time.

This is especially common in people that work on computers. Their neck is constantly put under a constant state of compression and stress.

Over months and years this leads to accumulation of micro traumas to the soft tissue, the muscles around the spine.

The hip and lower back is another example of a body part / region that is exposed to constant stress whether it's exercising or working.

Monthly Maintenance Visits Offer:

If you read this email and you're interested in getting on a program of being held accountable for maintaining yourself, along with an autopay discount, read on:

Maintenance visits of 1x/month will be offered at a price of $55 a mo. This is a $10 discount off of the normal price ($65).
