🍂 A season of gratitude and the gift of life 🍂

When Reagan, a young mom and nursing student, faced kidney failure, her life became a balancing act of dialysis, school and caring for her baby. When it came time for a transplant, her mother, Gail, stepped forward and donated her kidney — giving Reagan renewed health and a brighter future.

“She’s my daughter. I didn’t even consider not giving her my kidney,” Gail said.

Their story is one of many as Sacred Heart Medical Center, in Spokane, Wash., marks a record 76 kidney transplants this year. Each transplant represents a family given more time, more hope and more holidays together.

To every donor, family and caregiver making these second chances possible: thank you.

New research from Providence’s Center for Environmental Stewardship shows that some inhalers we use to treat asthma and other lung conditions can have an impact on the environment.

Most of this comes from metered-dose inhalers, which use a type of gas called hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) to push out the medicine. These inhalers make up about 98% of inhaler-related carbon emissions in the U.S. 🌍

By learning more about this, doctors and hospitals can make smarter choices that help both patients and the planet. 🌿

Dr. Brian Chesebro and his team at Providence are leading this work — showing that caring for people also means caring for our environment. 💚

Dr. Jon Gerry performed a life-saving procedure at Providence Cancer Institute in Portland, Oregon. Two months later, Gary took a trip to Mt. Hood. His wife helped him strap on his snowboard.

“I’ve never been happier in my life to be on the snow. I made my goal.”

Cancer-free for 18 months, Gary can be found on the slopes nearly every day. 🏂

Mission Hospital physicians and caregivers, together with representatives from the County of Orange and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, joined dozens of patient “actors” for a mock disaster drill. The exercise involved coordinated efforts across all departments to simulate a real-life emergency scenario, reinforcing our readiness to provide swift and effective care in the event of a mass emergency event. These types of drills ensure that we are prepared for any situation, and that our community receives the best care possible.

• Adolescent Rehabilitation
• Brain Injury Specialty Rehabilitation (in- and out-patient)

In fact, Providence Mission Hospital’s acute rehabilitation program is the only CARF-accredited program in South Orange County and one of only two, shared by sister ministry Providence St. Jude Hospital, in Orange County.

Three Mission Hospital caregivers were recognized by Orange County Fifth District Supervisor Katrina Foley for their contributions in supporting breast cancer awareness in our communities. Sandy Edson, senior director of imaging and laboratory services, Susann Burnett, nurse navigator, and Jane Codd, supervisor diagnostic imaging, were honored at this week’s Orange County Supervisors Meeting.

“This month we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to remember those that we’ve lost, those that are survivors, and those that are currently fighting for their lives,” shared Supervisor Foley. “This year’s theme is ‘every story is unique and every journey matters,’ reminding us that each life and story touched by breast cancer is dynamically personal. In 2024, an estimated 311,000 women and 2,800 men were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Our Orange County Healthcare Agency reports more than 360 lives lost to breast cancer annually in O.C. Breast cancer touches everyone.”

Added Sandy, “Jane and Susann have been tirelessly representing our LCI team at community events and are extremely dedicated to supporting our communities and our patients.

Leonard Cancer Institute, or LCI, is a world-class cancer center conveniently located across the street from Mission Hospital’s main campus. Learn more about LCI and its screening programs: http://provhealth.org/6185s4MTW
