The Arc Western Montana

In 1987, Montana State legislators took the first steps toward integrating institutionalized people with developmental disabilities into communities.

The Arc Western Montana, formerly Missoula Developmental Service Corporation (MDSC), has been opening doors and transforming lives since 1990 for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Montana. The legislation they passed created the concept of a nonprofit organization managing the human services support and carrying the fiduciary responsibility for adults with developmental disabilities placed in group residences as part of a broader urban community social movement. The city that bid for and won the practical application of such funding appropriation from the State for this innovative approach to caring for and nurturing folks with severe developmental disabilities was Missoula. The organization it established in 1989 was the Missoula Developmental Service Corporation a private fee-for-service nonprofit entity guided by a volunteer Board of Directors. By October 1990, three homes were ready to open their doors to the first 20 people coming from institutions where many of them had literally grown up. The organization now supports over 60 adults living in 10 homes and a day services center. A unique part of our services is that we offer clients with critical physical conditions, requiring emergency assistance and/or treatment, a unique nurse-managed residence with 24-hour on-site medical support.

What an amazing day cheering on our athletes at Olympics Montana Five Valleys Area the Special Olympics! Their determination, spirit, and teamwork were truly inspiring. Huge thanks to everyone who helped make it happen! 💪❤️

Some of our Foss folks took a little trip into the community today. A few snacks were picked up, a few good laughs were had, and it was nice to just get out for a bit. Simple moments like these mean a lot.

We had a wonderful Easter celebration at Kerr, filled with connection, joy, and community. Residents enjoyed a festive meal, Easter egg activities, and time together enjoying the spring weather.

Thank you to our staff for creating a warm and welcoming environment, and to everyone who helped make the day meaningful. It’s always special to see the smiles and shared moments during these celebrations.
