Below is a reply to reader with questions about my position on covid vaccines and wasn’t it better to support the immune system than to put ‘man made substances’ into our bodies.
I hope my reply is helpful to others with similar questions. I do offer an after-vaccination immune support natural medicine protocol. Many patients have found it helpful. Schedule an appointment if you want to know more. Be well.

It isn’t a question of either/or. Yes, we need to do all we can to support our immune system. I have always been and remain a doctor who does all she can to help people support their immune and overall health - and with the most natural methods and medicines possible.
I am also a realist and a physician. We all put ‘man made substances’ into our bodies on a regular basis - sometimes by circumstance, sometimes by choice. My neighbor puts poison on her lawn; it gets in my well and my drinking water. When I have certain types of dental work done, I welcome anesthesia. Who knows how much radiation and noxious fume pollution we absorb every time we travel by airplane? And what about cosmetics and hair products and skin lotions, and who know where and how some supplements are really manufactured?
The point is vaccines can be very good medicine. They are derived from natural substances. Much like homeopathy (the medicine that inspired vaccines), vaccines use a tiny amount of something to stimulate a protective effect from your immune system. It’s not that vaccines are bad in and of themselves. It’s the judicious, thoughtful use of vaccines that matters.
Having thoroughly evaluated all the scientific and medical information I could find, from many perspectives and several countries, I found myself in support of the initial series of two covid 19 vaccines. I had the Moderna shots in January and February of this year.
I continue to feel that faced with the remarkable and rare reality of this covid
pandemic, getting vaccinated is a better immediate and long-term health choice than remaining unvaccinated.
I wish you well.

Please GET VACCINATED! The life you save may be your own – or that of someone you love.
The Delta variant of Covid 19 is spreading rapidly in the United States. It is causing serious illness, hospitalization and even death in unvaccinated Americans of all ages. At last check, more than 95% of people dying of Covid this summer are unvaccinated.
Unfortunately, the Delta variant does have the ability to break through the defenses of vaccinated people. However, the Covid infection in these cases is milder and much less deadly.
Failing to get vaccinated is like playing Russian Roulette. At some point, you are going to encounter Covid. And as with Russian Roulette where players don’t know when a bullet will be released by the trigger pull, unvaccinated people of every age do not know how they will fare with Covid. Many will do fine, some will have long term symptoms, some will die.
This month marks the 6-month anniversary of all of us at One Doc getting our Covid vaccine. We are still alive and well, and grateful for the vaccine (we had the Moderna mRNA vaccine). Having it has allowed us to continue to work uninterrupted with our patients, has alleviated our anxiety about suffering or dying from Covid, and has given us a very real opportunity to participate in a community effort to improve public health.
For those of you who might be wondering – the decision was not easy. I’m naturally skeptical of many things, particularly mass-produced proclamations from government and conventional medicine. Though my aunt, a virologist, is an early pioneer in flu vaccination research, I’ve never had a flu shot and have no plans to get one in the future. I’m not a fan of measles and mumps and shingles shots. I think we Americans over-vaccinate and over-medicate our children, our animals and increasingly, our adults.
However, I am a fan of effective medicine and things that work. I fly in airplanes not because I like them but because I want to be somewhere far from where I live. I use a smart phone and computers despite the possible health risks of their electronics because they are necessary for me to live and work successfully in the world in 2021. I’m thankful to have been vaccinated for tetanus, polio and small pox.
With the information we have right now, Covid vaccines seem to be effective tools that work well to reduce the destructive impact of a new, globally spread virus. All vaccines carry some risk, but so too does driving your car, eating out in a restaurant, dating a new person, skiing, swimming and riding a bike.
If you’re not yet vaccinated, go get it today. If you have questions, if you want support for managing side effects you may experience after the vaccine, if you have Covid or are experiencing long term symptoms, schedule an appointment at One Doc. We’ve helped many with this pandemic challenge and are happy to help you too!
Be well.

“A wild patience has taken me this far” is the first line of a poem by the immortal Adrienne Rich and the title of one of her books of poetry, published in 1981.

It’s a line of poetry from which I have drawn much comfort over the past 38 years since first reading it. ‘A wild patience’ is something I’ve needed at various times in my life, and something I think we all need now.

We need the patience to quietly, slowly, and sensibly resume a life of physical connection. We need the patience to bear the truth that we don’t yet know how best to stay safe in the hills and valleys of life during a global pandemic. We need the patience to trust our bodies, our immune systems, ourselves. We need patience to keep knowing that healing is possible.

I learn about patience from the natural world, the ants that keep moving forward no matter the sticks or puddles or obstacles in their way, robins rebuilding nests the wind blew away, my little horse tolerating the bridle and the harness and the tire I ask her to drag as I prepare her to learn to pull a cart. I marvel at the patience of my COVID chicks – born on March 13 – who I’ve named Hope and Blessing, accepting and even reveling in life in a big plastic tub in our bathroom. Their chips and chirps of excitement about who knows what? - food, waking up from a nap, finding one another in the water bowl - cheer me immensely. I’m humbled by their patient strength – standing quietly when hold them in my hand or put them on the counter for a photo.

As we move to ‘opening up’ Montana, please continue to practice sensible social distancing, good hygiene and thoughtful self-care. If your nerves are frayed, simple nervine herbs like chamomile, peppermint, catnip, linden and lemon balm are very soothing. Tea is best, because the ritual of tea – boiling water, steeping leaves and flowers, pouring out in a favorite cup, sipping slowly as it cools – is itself a calming experience no matter the plants used in the tea.

Say grace before a meal – a prayer, a pause, a moment of reflection. Doing so soothes the nervous system; modern research shows it also improves digestion so you’ll get more nutrients from every bite.

Consider keeping a bottle of Calms Forte nearby. This homeopathic formula, made by Hylands, has been used for decades as a gentle way to calm the nervous system. When I was in naturopathic medical school, I heard the rattling of the Calm’s bottle echoing around a quiet classroom quite frequently during finals week.

We are all in our own sort of finals week – which will in fact be months – right now. Keep up the good work, the good care, the discipline and patience. Thank you for all you have done thus far to stop the spread of the corona virus. Thank you for supporting the community in which you live.

Thank you for supporting the health of my small business - One Doc Naturopathic Medicine. I remain here and happy to help you in whatever way I can.

Much love,

Dr. Jamison Starbuck

‘….Anger and tenderness: my selves
And now I can believe they breathe in me
as angels, not polarities.
Anger and tenderness: the spider’s genius
to spin and weave in the same action
from her own body, anywhere –
even from a broken web.

The cabin in the stand of pines
Is still for sale. I know this. Know the print
of the last foot, the hand that slammed and locked that door,
then stopped to wreathe the rain-smashed clematis
back on the trellis
for no one’s sake except its own.
I know the chart nailed to the wallboards
The icy kettle squatting on the burner.
The hands that hammered in those nails
emptied that kettle one last time
are these two hands
and they have caught the baby leaping
from between trembling legs
and they have worked the vacuum aspirator
and stroked the sweated temples
and steered the boat here through this hot
misblotted sunlight, critical light
imperceptibly scalding
the skin these hands will also salve.”

A little extra on masks - only wear one for the brief time you are in public. Take it off if it gets moist as water is a route viruses can travel. Remember that the outside of your mask is potentially contaminated so treat it as you would your hands that have touched door handles. Wash your mask in warm soapy water; throw it away if you cannot wash it.

Consider yourself a trendsetter and have fun wearing your mask. I’ve got several that are quite dandy. Flowers, teddy bears, even Woodstock (Snoopy’s pal) roasting marshmallows on a stick. Though no one can see it, I’m smiling.

Stay well.

Re-post from March 23rd:

Hi Patients and Friends.
At One Doc today we are thinking about the “vital force” – that spark of life that exists within and around each of us. I see it in the familiar birds making their annual March nest in the birdhouse just outside my kitchen window. It’s there in my horses, nickering happily as I come to the barn with their breakfast of hay and oats. We see it in the green tips of tulips pushing through the earth, and even in the decaying leaves we rake up from our gardens.
As a naturopathic physician, my daily task is to help my patients live in harmony with nature, in harmony with their own vital force. If we are thoughtful about the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, the plant medicines and even prescription drugs and surgeries we choose, our vital force and the health of our earth can flourish.
Remember today that your vital force is alive and well. It’s as present now as it was last month, when we worried little about the Coronavirus/COVID-19. Use this remarkable slowing down time to nourish and honor the vitality in all things. Re-learn the immune supportive properties of food, of rest, of certain botanical and homeopathic medicines, of creative pursuits, time in nature and time alone. We are here to help, to answer questions, soothe fears, treat your illness and boost your health.
This week I will mostly be doing telephone consults; I will see people in person on a case-by-case basis. Our plan for now is to be open this week between 9am and noon. Since our life flow is ever changing right now, please call the office for updates on the schedule. 406 549-0005.
Much love.
Dr. JS

Re-post from March 18th:

One Doc remains open with Dr. Starbuck and her intrepid office assistant Rachel here to help you with all your health care needs, including worries, stressors and physical symptoms associated with the current coronavirus/COVID-19. Our naturopathic pharmacy is open and we are well stocked with natural medicines that can help you get and/or stay well. Please call us to place your order before coming to the office so we can have your prescriptions ready for you to pick up. This will speed up transaction time, keeping physical contact to a minimum.

As of today March 18, we are temporarily moving to telemedicine for most of our patient visits. If you are acutely ill and need to be seen in person by Dr. Starbuck for any reason, we will work out a way to do that.

Please take seriously the public health recommendations for social distancing, handwashing, and caring for one another. Research tells us that prayer, meditation, walking, spending time with pets or in your garden, saying grace before meals and noticing the beauty and loveliness in life around you boost immune health and make room for optimism.

We know how to do this – I’m finding it so hopeful to remember that.

I closed my mouth and spoke
to you in a hundred silent ways.

RUMI

Re-post from March 16th

At One Doc we, like health care providers around the globe, are dedicated to helping our patients and our community be safe and well during this global pandemic. So much is unknown about COVID 19 – many solutions lie in the future. At the same time, it’s helpful to remember that people have prevented, treated and recovered from viral illness for thousands of years. The same is true for this new virus. We will help you using tried and true strategies in natural medicine and health lifestyle choices. We are also following Montana and federal Public Health directives and staying informed about new information regarding diagnosis and treatment.
COVID-19 is a virus, in some ways similar to the flu, in some ways similar to the common cold. Because it’s a new virus, none of us have any immunity to it yet. Your best bet is to do the things that you know have helped you stay healthy during cold and flu season in the past and to get help from your doctor if your own measures are not enough.

Here are our answers to questions as of March 16:

Our office is open for our regular hours. Dr. Starbuck is available for emergencies via her usual paging number which all patients should have.

For the next 4 weeks, we are allowing only patients and people picking up medicines in to the office. We want to observe the public health six feet distance recommendation in our waiting room so please do not bring children, friends or family members to the office unless they have a scheduled appointment with Dr. Starbuck.

If you suspect you may have COVID 19, please call the office. Do not come in. We will schedule a telephone consult with Dr. Starbuck for you immediately. Dr. Starbuck will assess your symptoms and advise you of the best next steps for evaluation and treatment.

Follow Public Health directives regarding hand washing and limited social interactions. Soap and warm water work well to kill germs and can less irritating to the skin than hand sanitizer. For home use, bar soap is Dr. Starbuck’s favorite because generally its packaging has a low environmental impact.
Stay hydrated. We recommend that you daily drink ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, drink 75 ounces of water daily. There is no health benefit to overhydrating. Please avoid plastic bottled water. The emptied bottles are horrible for our environment and the quality of the water inside plastic bottles is unknown. In most of Montana, tap water and well water are your best choice. If you don’t like your tap or well water, you can refill your own containers for less than a dollar per gallon at many stores.
Get fresh air several times a day. Take a walk, make plans for a garden, get a start on spring yard chores.
Avoid herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, w**d killers, fertilizers, insect repellants and other poisons. These chemicals not only degrade our environment, they may damage your liver, kidney and immune health when you use them.
Eat foods high in vitamin C, bioflavonoids and beta carotene. Leafy greens, orange and yellow vegetables, and fruit are great sources of these immune system and lung healthy nutrients. Add chopped fresh parsley, spinach, or chard to your soups or baked foods just before eating. Sprouted seeds and beans are loaded with nutrition – it’s the perfect time to learn how to grown your own at home. Use the internet for instructions.
Herbs and nutrients can be potent anti-viral medicines but there are none that we know will absolutely cure COVID-19. At One Doc we urge caution and thoughtfulness in determining what sort of supplementation is best for you and your family. For help with this, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Starbuck.
Remember that love and kindness are great medicine. In difficult times, the basics work best. Love, kindness, deep breathing, slowing down, seeing the beauty in small things all have a positive effect on our health. Dr. Starbuck often turns to the poetry of Rumi, a 13th century Sufi mystic whose work inspires many to be their best selves. We will close with a few of his words:

‘Never lose hope, my heart,
miracles dwell in the invisible.’

Stay well.

Courage, Fear and Forget Not Your Nose

Dear Patients and Friends:
In these scary times, we are all asked to dig deep, to find courage, patience and the strength to keep giving our best to our communities, our families, ourselves. None of us have a foolproof solution for the coronavirus/COVID-19. We do not yet have a vaccine nor a COVID specific anti-viral drug. Even when those are developed, we know from the flu that they are not a guarantee against illness and death. Some CDC estimates indicate that last year 60,000 people died from the flu despite the predominant use of the flu vaccine.

What we do know is that supporting one’s immune system always good medicine. We do this with good nutrition, hydration, safe supplementation with the powerful anti-oxidant vitamin C, with extra foods high in beta-carotene (carrots, sweet potatoes, kale and spinach) because beta-carotene turns into vitamin A which nourishes the respiratory tract. We also do it with hygiene, because hygiene kills the invaders at the entryway to our bodies.

Please expand beyond hand washing. Include your nose and throat in your hygiene regimen.

Do this:
Wear a mask when you go in a store or public place. Homemade masks, bandanas, scarves are all helpful at cutting down on the spread of viruses. Coverings of this sort are NOT completely protective and do not guarantee your safety against the coronavirus/COVID 19. But they help somewhat and wearing them in public is you doing your part to help care for yourself and others.

I have a friend/patient who is making cotton masks. If you need one, please call the office (406 549-0005) and we will help you get one.

Gargle for 1 minute when you get home from time out in public and before bed. Gargling kills germs living in the back of your throat. Use an over the counter antiseptic gargle solution like Listerine or my favorite Alka-thyme (which we have at the office) because it is saline based and gentle on your throat.

Nasal irrigation – viruses get in our noses, multiply and enter the bloodstream. Rinsing your nose with a saline solution is a way to reduce the viral population in your nose. It also rinses out dust, pollen and other nasal irritants. I use a neti pot to irrigate my nose when I come home from work during cold and flu season. These days I’m using it not only when I get home from work, but also on the weekends if I go out to stores or public places.

You can make your own saline solution: ½ teaspoon salt in 1 cup water. If you have reason to think your water may have microbes, you can boil the water first before making your saline solution.

You can also boost the antiseptic properties of your nasal irrigation by adding ¼ teaspoon of Alka-thyme to 1 cup of saline solution. If you have an infection, Dr. Starbuck can consult with you and prescribe a specific medicated nasal solution for your individual need.

If you don’t have a neti pot, you can use a plain saline nasal spray or sq**rt saline solution into your nose with a bulb syringe. Be gentle – sq**rting things into your nose can be irritating. Always follow use of a neti pot or saline nasal rinse with gently blowing your nose to remove mucus and microscopic debris.

In these scary and hard times, it is a comfort to know that there are things we can do. We can help ourselves stay safe. We can help others by practicing social distancing and good hygiene. We can be brave even while we are afraid. We can keep going, we can care.
Much love,
Dr. Starbuck

'Having courage does not mean
that we are unafraid
Having courage and showing courage
mean we face our fears
We are able to say,
'I have fallen but I will get up'.

In the midst of all the frenzy about COVID 19, I urge people to remember that natural medicine (herbs and homeopathic remedies), simple, healthy food, adequate hydration, rest and a balanced emotional perspective have always - for centuries- offered solutions for good health and defense against viral illness.

The same is true for the Corona virus/COVID19. We know what to do, you know what to do to take good care of your immune system. If you’ve forgotten, I and others can help you remember.

‘Your body is woven
from the light of heaven.
Are you aware
that its purity and swiftness
is the envy of angels
and its courage
keeps even devils away.’
― Rumi

Feel free to come by the office to pick up our handout on nutrients and natural medicines that can help you support your immune system and boost your innate viral defense systems. I will also post it here on Monday March 16.

Much love - with each breath, in and out.
