“My child is struggling and I don’t know why.”
“We’ve tried everything. Nothing is working.”

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone — and there may be answers you haven’t found yet.

We are a naturopathic practice in Missoula specializing in holistic mental health care for kids and teens. We look at the whole picture: genetics, physical health, sleep, stress, nutrition, family dynamics and the demands of school and daily life.

Many times we find an underlying factor that other providers have overlooked.

Yes, we see newborns! 💚

Welcoming a new baby is exciting—and overwhelming. At Montana Whole Health, we love caring for newborns and supporting families right from the start.

Newborn visits here look a little different. We typically spend 45–60 minutes with families, taking the time to check in on feeding, sleep, growth, recovery after birth, and the many questions that come up in those first days and weeks. Our focus is on optimizing health early and laying the foundation for long-term wellbeing. Our visits are relaxed and unrushed, giving you plenty of time to ask questions and get real answers.

We understand that the health of Mom is closely tied to the health of her baby. We also specialize in postpartum care to make sure everyone in the family is taken care of.

A few things to know if you’re planning newborn care with us:
• Families new to Montana Whole Health need to schedule a brief meet & greet at least one month before your due date
• Babies born in a hospital are usually seen 1–3 days after discharge
• Babies born at home or in a birth center should be seen within 24–48 hours
• Please call us as soon as you’re home to schedule that first visit
• We’ll ask that birth records be sent over before the appointment

YES, we do bill insurance.

However, we are not able to bill Healthy Montana Kids, as naturopathic doctors are currently excluded from that plan—but we hope to see that change in the future. Please call your state representatives to request that ND’s be added to HMK.

If you’re expecting and looking for thoughtful, unhurried newborn care, we’d love to meet you. 💫Click the link in our bio to schedule a free 15-minute “Meet & Greet” appointment, or call our office (406) 552-1717. You can also text us during office hours to set up an appointment: (406) 552-1919.

Let’s talk about hormones.

Hormone problems are one of the most common reasons our patients are fatigued. The thyroid gland (pictured here!) sets the metabolic rate for the body. Low thyroid = low energy, weight gain, constipation, dry skin, focus problems and more. It’s best to check a FULL thyroid panel for patients that have these symptoms, not just a TSH.

But there are many other hormones that play a big role in our mood, energy, and attention. For women: Estradiol, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA, and Cortisol are all super important. Salivary hormone testing is MUCH more reliable than bloodwork for these hormones.

There are so many ways to balance hormones! We have SO many more options than just birth control or HRT. Our goal is to optimize health so our patients feel amazing.

Tired? When was the last time you had a *thorough* test for nutrient deficiencies?

Here at Montana Whole Health our bare minimum testing for tired patients is:
• Screening for anemia, hormone, immune system and metabolic problems
• Testing for iron, vitamin D, B12 and folate deficiencies

Depending on the patient we may test for so much more! Some nutrients are best tested with whole blood (magnesium, zinc), some are better tested with urine (vitamin B6, vitamin B2), and some are tricky to test for at all (vitamin A).

Naturopathic doctors are the experts in knowing what test to order based on your symptoms + history!

If you’ve been told that your labs are “normal” but you’re still exhausted - it’s time to give us a call. (406) 552-1717.

Dr. Michelson here… Nearly all the teens I see in my Montana practice test low for Vitamin D. Low levels are common in winter months, northern climates, or if they spend most of their time indoors (yet another reason to encourage outside time!). Low levels are also more common in teens with darker skin tones or limited dietary sources.

When vitamin D is low, teens may notice:
• Ongoing fatigue or low energy
• Low mood
• Getting sick more often
• Muscle aches or headaches

These symptoms overlap a lot with stress, school demands, and mental health concerns. Instead of guessing, we often check vitamin D levels so we know what we’re working with.

Testing helps us:
• Identify true deficiencies
• Supplement safely and appropriately (not too little, not too much)
• Monitor how levels respond over time
Vitamin D is not a cure-all, but when levels are low, correcting them can make other supports like therapy, sleep changes, or nutrition work better!

💡 For teens who feel run down or struggle with mood, vitamin D is a simple but important piece of the puzzle.

If you have a teen who is struggling with fatigue, mood, academic performance, motivation or other health symptoms: give me a call! I’m happy to help solve your teen’s problems. (406) 552-1717

Sleep is one of the biggest drivers of teen mood, focus, and emotional regulation, and it’s often one of the hardest health habits to keep consistent.

Here are 3 practical, realistic ways parents can help:

1⃣ Create a predictable wind-down routine. It’s not just about limiting screens—it’s about signaling the brain that the day is ending.

Consistency matters more than perfection. Aim for the same sequence each night: dim lights, quiet activity, then bed.

2⃣ Reduce evening stimulation.
Late homework stress, intense conversations, caffeine, and screens all activate the nervous system. When possible, shift stimulating activities earlier and keep evenings calmer and lower-key.

3⃣ Keep wake-up times steady.
Sleeping in late on weekends can make Monday mornings harder. Aim to keep weekend
wake-ups within 1–2 hours of school-day schedules when possible.

If your teen struggles with frequent night wakings, bedtime anxiety, or extreme daytime fatigue,
sleep may be a symptom rather than the root issue.

🧠 Remember, sleep isn’t laziness—it’s biology. And teens need more of it than adults!

Anxiety in teens rarely looks like “nervousness.”
More often, it shows up in the body, in behavior, or in sudden changes to sleep, mood, or school performance.

Teens today are under enormous pressure—schoolwork, social media, friendships, hormones—and many don’t have the language to say, “I’m anxious.” Instead, they show it.

If you’re noticing these signs, you’re not alone.
This is exactly the type of care I provide.

I work with teens and families using an evidence-based, integrative approach that looks at the whole picture: physical health, emotional wellbeing, stress, sleep, hormones, and lifestyle. My visits are calm, supportive, and focused on getting your teen feeling like themselves again.

My name is Dr. Michelson and I am now scheduling new teen and adult patients!

Yes, we see newborns!⠀

Here at Montana Whole Health we typically spend 45-60 minutes with families for well child visits, focusing on optimizing health for children. Parents and caregivers tell us that they love our approach to well child care. During these visits we help troubleshoot parenting problems, discuss childhood nutrition (including picky eating strategies), and help parents anticipate really common developmental or behavioral issues at every stage. We want to prevent health problems before they even start! In other words: we help your child THRIVE.

All of this starts on the very first day of life!

Check out our website if you’d like to learn more! www.mtwholehealth.com

Here is our protocol for seeing new babies:⠀
* Families new to Montana Whole Health need to schedule a 15-minute “meet & greet” at Montana Whole Health at least 1 month prior to your due date!⠀
* If your baby is born in a hospital they will have their first neonatal checkup completed by the staff pediatrician. Your baby will also receive a checkup before they are discharged from the hospital. Babies born in a hospital should be seen in our office 2-3 days after discharge.⠀
* If your baby is born at home or at The Birth Center they will need to have a checkup in our office within 48 hours (preferably 24 hours).⠀
* Please call the office as soon as your family is settled at home to schedule your child’s first well child check. If your child has any complications during or shortly after birth please continue to see his/her pediatrician (assigned in the hospital) until they are discharged to “standard” outpatient care.⠀
* Please have the hospital, birth center or midwife fax records to (406) 203-5130 shortly after birth.⠀

We do have limited availability for newborns. If you are expecting call soon to schedule a free 15-minute “meet & greet” appointment.
