"Food sensitivities don’t always mean a lifetime of avoiding the offending foods. Actually, in a majority of cases, you can heal from food sensitivities.

Food allergies and food sensitivities are NOT the same thing. A food allergy is a type of immune response that involves IgE (immunoglobulin E). Symptoms related to allergies are often itching, anaphylaxis, rashes, congestion, etc. A food sensitivity is a type of immune response that involves IgG or IgA (immunoglobulins G & A). Food sensitivities often develop as a result of imbalance and/or inflammation in the digestive tract, and may be resolved when the underlying digestive issue is corrected. Food sensitivities can cause a myriad of symptoms - some common ones include congestion, headaches, bloating, diarrhea, IBS, nausea, reflux, and weight gain. When our digestive lining is damaged, it allows proteins from foods - which should stay in our gut - to escape to the rest of the body (you may have heard of this process as “Leaky Gut”). The immune system sees these proteins as foreign, and attacks them with the above-mentioned immunoglobulins.

To heal from food sensitivities, I usually counsel patients to remove the offending foods and treat their underlying digestive complaints. Sometimes this involves using antimicrobial herbs, however, the treatment always has a strong focus on herbs & supplements to restore healthy tissue integrity and rebalance the gut microbiome (i.e. promote the growth of bacteria and yeast that typically live in a healthy gut). I’ve found that often, when the root cause is properly addressed, patients can reintroduce foods without experiencing a relapse in symptoms. There are times when foods continue to create issues or should remain removed for other reasons. However, more often than not, we can reintroduce foods successfully! My goal is to avoid restrictive dieting long term and enable patients to enjoy their food again.

Not sure if you have food sensitivities? There are ways to test for this. My opinion is that a classic Elimination-Challenge Diet gives us the best information. In some instances, I also utilize blood labs to determine food sensitivities.
