Woman giving birth, with midwife and supporters, Chancay culture, medieval Peru. A woman-made representation.

Repost from

We often speak about colonisation in the past tense. But the effects of it are very much present.

Colonisation has led to systemic racism, cyclical poverty, economic inequity, violence, and a loss of language and culture and although an increased attention to women’s rights and gender decolonisation has led to practical gains for many women across the globe, colonisation continues to shape the lives of many through the perpetuation of imperialist structures.

The medical community is no stranger to this. The expertise of midwives has been systematically undermined and their skills corroded with women ultimately being the ones who suffer.

Investing in midwives and their ability to provide culturally inclusive care is a way to fight colonialism - who’s joining the fight?✊🏽

Hey everyone, I am trying to send this this to everyone I know but strangely I do not have all the email addresses in the world. Do people still use email? Anyway THIS IS IMPORTANT. If you live in Montana please take one minute and call or write in support of this bill, especially if you or anyone you know has had or wants to have or knows anyone who has had a homebirth....
The midwives in Montana have a bill in the legislature and it is about to be voted on in the House of Representatives. DO YOU VALUE MIDWIFERY CARE? If so, PLEASE contact your legislator and tell them that you support House Bill 392 (HB392).
This bill expands the list of medications that your midwife can carry (including those to treat postpartum hemorrhage) and allows her to access them directly. The bill is all about enhancing safety for families, no matter where they decide to give birth.
I know you are all busy, but IF YOU VALUE MIDWIFERY CARE, please do the following things right now:
1. Call 406-444-4800. This will allow you to leave a message for one or more law makers. Tell them that you support HB392. And you would like that message to be relayed to every member of the House of Representatives. If you have time for only one thing, please do this.
2. After figuring out who your representative is (find that here: https://leg.mt.gov/legislator-lookup/) email them this way: https://leg.mt.gov/web-messaging/ to tell them that you support HB392
If you have questions, you are welcome to call me anytime and I'd be happy to chat with you.
We really need you all to do this in order to enhance safety for moms and babies choosing midwives. I know you are all so busy but please take the time now.

It is unbelievable that anyone would ever have thought it was a good idea to prescribe antacids to a baby but it happens every day.

However, no meaningful associations were seen with prenatal exposure

NACPM is unapologetically and unequivocally committed to dismantling white supremacy, structural racism and all forms of oppression in midwifery at-large and in the Certified Professional Midwifery community specifically.

We, the NACPM leadership team, are deeply disturbed by the racist and harmful conversation between two CPMS being circulated on social media over the past few days. We fundamentally denounce the racist content of the communication and share in the outrage. As the professional association for CPMs, we expect that our members, chapter leaders, and all those associated with our organization consistently demonstrate their alignment with our organizational values and commitments.

As community-based midwives, CPMs play a critical role in serving people, families and communities, especially those disproportionately harmed by violent systems of oppression as evidenced by racial inequities in birth outcomes and experiences. We call upon all midwives, but specifically white midwives, to confront how their actions and behavior may perpetuate individual, interpersonal and systemic operation of racism, most especially anti-Black racism, in midwifery. The integrity and health of the CPM community and the people we serve depend on it.

We continue to stand firm in our values and commitments, now and in the future.
