{People need to hear: you are loved, it's okay to be you, and you matter.}
⁣⁣⁣
Children need to hear and see how much adults respect and love them unconditionally. Words and actions must align to feel authentic. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Perhaps, you received love from someone other than a parent, maybe a teacher, friend's parent, or family member. ⁣⁣⁣

Perhaps you are someone's adult that hears and sees them. ⁣

Who made you feel seen? ⁣⁣⁣

What do we mean when we say "help to organize your child's feelings"?

Emotion coaching is the process of guiding your child through intense emotions by validating, relating, naming the emotion, and holding boundaries.

Children need to learn that emotions are normal, they’re important, and they need to be followed through (not suppressed or avoided).

This method was developed by Dr. Adele Lafrance Robinson and Dr. Joanne Dolhanty.

"How many of you heard, "go to your room until you get over it," when you were upset as a child?

How did it feel?

Lonely?

More upsetting?

Like you were misunderstood?

Shamed?

And what did you really do that was so bad?

The "take it to your room until you get over it” really just shames a child just for being human, while being close to your child through an upset helps m to know that you care, quickly reestablishes a warm, close connection, and gives your child a deep sense of wellbeing and the confidence to thrive.

When your child is upset, crying, or having a tantrum, respect his right to have feelings, allow them to cry and listen to everything, both what he says and what he shows you while he experiences the upset.

Tell your child, “I’m sorry it’s hard; I’ll stay with you while you’re upset.”

Light touch and comfortable warmth enhance social bonds through an association with a feeling of well-being.

Touch has also been shown to be mildly sedative, and can decrease blood pressure, while aiding in autonomic regulation and cardiovascular health.

Try it next time your little one gets stormy and let us know how it goes.
