What not to say when someone is grieving:

💠At least they’re in a better place

đź’ Everything happens for a reason

đź’ They lived a long life

đź’ Be strong

đź’ Time heals all wounds

đź’ I know exactly how you feel

💠You’ll get over this

đź’ God needed another angel

Even when meant with love, these can feel dismissive or minimizing.

What matters more than the right words is simply being there — listening, sitting in the silence, and letting them grieve without trying to fix it.

Bereavement services at Stillwater Hospice support you for up to a year after your loss. Please reach out to one of our teams in Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
