From September 15th through October 15th, we recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month. During the four weeks, celebrations honor the heritage and contributions made by members of the Hispanic community. With great fanfare, celebrations sweep across Latin America, Central American, and Mexico, and Chili commemorating each country's independence from week to week! The Hispanic population has grown to nearly 62 million people in the United States. since 2020. According to Pew Research data, that number may be higher since not all who are of Hispanic descent identify as Hispanic. Furthermore, that same year, more than half of the Hispanic population were registered to vote, a historic milestone. As the Hispanic population grows, more opportunity presents itself to embrace the rich culture and vast history they share. From coast to coast, we celebrate Hispanic heritage every day in mainstream society. It is not only reflecting our cultural differences; it adds a different perspective to our lives for us to enjoy.

While September sees a downtick in the number of outdoorsy days, that doesn’t mean you can’t get outside and enjoy the waning days of summer. September is the first month of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the first month of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. September’s full moon is appropriately named the Harvest Moon. However, the Harvest Moon occasionally lands in October because this full moon is so named. After all, it’s the closest one to the autumnal equinox in September. When the Harvest Moon lands in October, September’s full moon is named the Corn Moon.

National Love Your Lunch Day is on September 19, and we are bringing awareness to something often overlooked—lunch shaming. Love Your Lunch Day celebrates food diversity and encourages kids to respect all kinds of lunches at school. On September 19, we are asking parents and educators to take extra time to talk to kids about lunch shaming and how to spot it. All kids should feel comfortable enjoying the foods they love at home and at school without fear of embarrassment or bullying during lunch time. However, many students are made to feel ashamed about the foods they bring to school. Often, these lunches reflect a family’s culture, traditions or socio-economic status, which makes it even more hurtful.

On the second Sunday in September, National Pet Memorial Day offers a moment to remember pets who have passed. Pets play an important role in our lives. Not only are they companions, but pets become part of the family, too. Pets keep us responsible and remind us to play. When we are too serious, they lighten up our lives. Many pets keep us healthy, too.

All parents deserve a day off and on September 14, National Parents Day Off brings an opportunity for parents to recharge and get some much-deserved recognition. Parents are the organizers, cheerleaders, teachers, and directors of the family. They wear many hats and rarely have a moment for themselves. Yet, they are dedicated to raising successful, well-adjusted children. Once school starts, parents have a window of time to take a breather. While we know carpools, after-school activities, and school projects seem never-ending, taking time for yourself benefits you and the entire family. National Parents Day Off focuses on recognizing every parent and rewarding them for their commitment to their children, no matter what stage of life they are in.
