One of the largest interventional dietary trials ever performed—the PREDIMED study—followed more than 7,000 people at high risk for cardiovascular disease. They were randomized into different diet groups, and one group received a free half pound of nuts each week for four years. Compared with other two groups, the added-nuts group appeared to cut their stroke risk in half. Regardless of which group participants were assigned to, those who consumed more nuts overall had a significantly lower risk of dying prematurely.
Walnuts may improve artery function, specifically the ability of our arteries to relax and open normally. This is important for heart disease prevention.
Additionally, people who ate more than three servings of walnuts per week appeared to slash their risk of dying from cancer in half.
Unless you have a nut allergy, try making walnuts a regular part of your day. Add walnuts to salads, oatmeal bowls, smoothies, pesto, and even homemade bean burgers like our Lentil–Walnut Burgers. see.nf/lentil-walnut-burgers
