Sleep and rest allow the body to replenish depleted energy reserves and allow us to maintain normal physical and mental functioning. Adequate sleep is essential for good physical and mental health, as it is necessary for the body's restorative processes. These processes occur in harmony with the body's sleep cycles, which are dictated by the body's natural rhythms.

While sleeping approximately 8-7 hours a night is vital to physical and mental health, dreaming is necessary for psychological health.
Most theories of dream function state that dreams enable people to master their environments. In dreams, people integrate new experiences and solve conflicts from their waking lives. Another function of both sleep and dreaming is to assist in the processing and storage of memories.

Let's say that you’re in a meeting and you’ve worked on the prep for weeks and are feeling stressed. You’re already exhausted because this stress has been doing a number on your body. The longer you sit there, the more stressed you become, and you start to feel nauseous and you lose your appetite. Once the meeting is over, you feel such a relief it seems like the tension lets go and a weight is lifted. You no longer feel tight, but you feel exhausted and could probably pass on food because the stress has already created a reaction in your body that will take awhile to get over.

This example demonstrates the relationship between, from a Chinese Medicine perspective, your liver and spleen, which are the two organs Bai Shao targets. The liver needs to be soothed (the stress) or the spleen will get overpowered (fatigue, lack of appetite, etc). Once the spleen has been overpowered for too long, some nourishing will have to take place to bring the body back to a more healthy or normal state.

Think of your health as a flowing river. There are often obstacles-dams or boulders-- preventing the river from flowing smoothly. In our bodies, these obstructions are stress, nutrient deficiencies, and a reliance on unhealthy coping mechanisms. When we remove the obstacles, the river can flow freely again.

The Secret Gift Of Herbs!

There are not only many secret gifts to learn about herbs, but there are also dozens of fun projects and activities for using them.

When using fresh herbs, only use those from areas that have not been sprayed with chemicals to kill bugs or weeds. Many supermarkets now have a section of spray-free (called organic) produce. It is also important not to use herbs growing near roads where cars and trucks pass. The reason is that plants absorb the lead from the engine exhaust, and you don't want to use foods and herbs that contain lead. It is always best to eat and use organic herbs and foods whenever possible.
